Hi! I need some advice to upgrade my CPU… I had an opportunity last week to buy a 3090… but now the bottleneck with my current CPU is huge… And I want to try to upgrade my CPU to the "cheapest" option to avoid as much bottleneck as possible.

My current setup is:
Motherboard: TUF B450-PLUS GAMING (AM4)
CPU: Ryzen 7 1700
RAM: 16gb 3200mhz (2x8 dual channel)
Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD for OS and most used games, and 2 x 3TB HDD
PSU: Corsair 850w
Monitor: Main Sceptre 34" 1440p Ultrawide , side Samsung 27" 1080p

Right now, I need to make the cheapest upgrade to get as little bottleneck as I can.. So i think i will keep the AM4 platform.. I saw that with a BIOS upgrade, i have some options for upgrades..

Ryzen 7 5700x for ≈ USD 100

Ryzen 7 5700x3d for ≈ USD 190

Ryzen 7 5800X for ≈ USD140

Ryzen 9 5900X for ≈ USD250

Ryzen 9 3950X for ≈ USD230

Ryzen 9 3900X for ≈ USD170

But i don't know much about the new Ryzens CPUs.. According to chatgpt with a 5700x in 1440p i should be good.. but i don't know if the $40 diference for a 5800x would make a significant difference or not..  or the Ryzen 9 3900x for 170..

I made some online comparisons.. and it looks like the Ryzen 7 5700x for ≈ USD 100 would be the best upgrade bang for the buck.. But I'm open to opinions or suggestions! Which CPU do you guys think would be the best option to upgrade? Even if its not my list..

Please stop using CHAT GPT for this stuff, and dont admit to using it, simple google search and going through some of the posts would be far better.

5700x3D/5800x3D is the one youll want. Just depends on if you can find 5800x3D for around the same price, but usually not. As mentioned you will have to update the bios, may take a few steps since not all boards like just jumping to the latest bios. Id start with the one that says 5800x3D compatibility, then to the latest one.

I think you already know the answer to this.

If you just want a bang-for-the-buck, "good enough" upgrade, then get the 5700X.

If you want a bigger upgrade that costs more, get the 5700X3D.

Those are the only two CPUs worth considering if those prices are accurate.

You can turn a 5700X into a 5800X by just enabling PBO, which is supported by your motherboard, so the 5800X is pointless. And if your use case is gaming, the 5900X just gives you the same performance as the 5700X, but it's more expensive. And then the 3900X and 3950X are just slower for gaming by a decent amount, so not worth considering.

Whats the problem with chatgpt.. its a tool, i got a list of CPUs, then i was able to google them and check for performance.. and when i had some info about the topic i made this post to get my info right.. i dont really see the problem lol

I wasnt able to find the x3D versions on a good price.. the lowest ever was 190..

Meh. ChatGPT is perfectly fine for getting a starting point for this sort of thing if you have no idea where to look. From there, you can do additional research to refine. The biggest issue is that ChatGPT may be working off older data.

I was thinking about the 5700x.. but since i dont know much about the new line ups of Ryzens CPUs.. my choice could have been wrong.. for example i didnt know anything of the things you told me about the 3900x and turn the 5700 into a 5800..

I didnt know about PBO and turning the 5700x into a 5800.. that makes that options really good option for the price.. thanks! i will check that PBO thing

Just tried it and it's somewhat recent.

Really with a little due diligence it wasn't that bad or that far off. Missing newest gen Ryzen and newest gen Intel on the list, but mostly spot on.

I tried with a 7700k ( to see if it would catch the 7700x vs 7700k) and it recognized that it was Intel without any other context. It also gave me this summary with some more budget friendly options, although it didn't want to go lower than a 7800x3d, and gave a nice little "here's the difference between 2 different AMD CPUs.

If you have no idea where to look, You would not be using Chat GPT. People who are not in the know about this stuff do not know or use Chat GPT. It has way to much misleading data and just regurgitates data that it doesnt really organize well. For someone already not in the know, its not very useful. There is some knowledge on how to search for things properly, to just jump to ChatGPT is not the right route when you already know how to search for the information you need.

Way to much bad data and often times it tells you stuff that its grabbing from plenty of places that arent exactly accurate. Its not really a useful tool when people who do know what they are doing and talking about look at the data it gives you. 5900x, 3950x and 3900x should never be put into the equation at those pricing. it should just be between 5600x, 5700x/5800x and 5700x3d/5800x3D. It should not be recommending 3000 series for a 3090, as that will still have a bottleneck. Not nearly as much as a 1700 but still enough to not make them even worth mentioning with a 3090.

You bought a 3090, you already spent a lot even with it being used, you may as well get the most out of it that you can in a reasonable manner.

Yes, i upgraded my monitor at the same time as the GPU.. so i think going from 1080p to 1440p will help a little.. i made some benchmarks with superpositions.. and the numers were better going from 1080p with 50% CPU utilization. to 90% in 4k.. so 1440p will help to reduce CPU bottleneck a little

Oh come on. ChatGPT is fairly ubiquitous in the real world, outside of tech nerds. My mother uses ChatGPT and she struggles to do much else other than launch a web browser. It's much more prevalent than you think.

It's the #9 most visited website in the world, for cripes sake.

I would agree with you 6 months ago. I don't anymore though.

IOs 18 has built in Chat GPT, rumor is the new Samsungs will come with it built in as well. Like it or not, it's becoming much more mainstream. All these people using CoPilot that comes preloaded on laptops and desktops. LLMs are here to stay, and they are getting better and better.

I know the info there is not perfect.. but thats why i took that list, then searched for prices, performance, and made my mind about wich ones could be a good option.. and from there i went to a more trusty source (this forum).. but at least i came with some info and not naked.. i think using gpt that way its usefull, even if u know that the info its not 100% the best one.. some google searchs with some gpt can make a search for info really easy..

And for the 3090.. it was a $200 upgrade over my last GPU, i think it was a good deal (considering i live Argentina and everything here its more expensive)

5700x3D with a ~$50 kit of 2x16GB 3600MT/sec.

Your only other option would be AM5 and a 7800x3D/9800x3D. It depends on how much you're willing to actually spend.

Thats the point.. right now i need to spend a little as possible.. changing to AM5 means new mobo, new ram, new CPU.. its way too much.. i cant make that much upgrades right now. Thats why i was checking for options on the AM4 platform

Yes,, that seems to be the most voted option... the 3d version being double the price will be hard to choose haha, but i will think it this week and make the purchase..

The difference in performance is proportional, if not favored by the 5700x3D. I'd make the argument that anything else isn't worth it for AM4 for a gaming PC than a 3D v-cache CPU. You'd be better off saving that money for AM5 than spending it on a 5700x.

The 5700X3D is about 18% faster than the 5700X across a range of games at 1080p with an RTX 4090 according to Techspot/Hardware Unboxed.

At 1440p ultrawide with a 3090, there will be no significant difference, unless the OP is going to use heavy DLSS and turn down settings trying to push framerates.

Mmm, interesting.. i was thinking that the upgrade in performance from a 1700 to a 5700x for $100 was worth it.. even if later this year im able to upgrade to a AM5 platform, considering that upgrading to a AM5 platform will be a much bigger number..

18% better is what makes me doubt about the x3d being double the price.. bang for the buck the normal 5700x looks like its a better option..

And about DLSS i dont think im going to be pushing a lot of that.. i would like to take advange to the 160hz of the monitor.. but if using DLSS i will keep going to the cpu botteneck i can just start doing some choices about what to turn off to get more fps..

If we're talking strictly the specific single player AAA games that those organizations use, sure, but that's not all inclusive. It feels like I have to continuously beat this dead horse when describing this and how 3D v-cache is disproportionately capable at anything live service.

You'd be jumping into the platform that'll retain a lot better value. Most AM5 CPUs have iGPUs which help retain their value for future resale. Its also LGA instead of PGA, which makes the CPUs far less likely to be damaged from just existing.

The key is that in broad spectrum it's 18% but in many games it may be 30% and it also significantly improves 1% and 0.1% lows. If OP plays a lot of games that would benefit from VCache then he will see way more than just 18% on avg.

And modern games can be really CPU intensive even at high resolutions especially for frametime stability.

It is worth it. It's still a massive upgrade. I just know the 5700X3D is better pick if you can afford it as more and more games are getting CPU heavy and the X3D does some heavy lifting.
