Advice needed: PSU choice between Corsair RM1000 and EVGA 1300G2

Hi,

 

Just upgraded from a single GTX 780 to dual 780's in SLI.  My existing HX750 can't keep up.  Computer is shutting off during intensive gaming (I game in triple monitor surround 24" x 3 @5760x1200).  I like Corsair stuff but I want something that will fill this gap for me.  I want to keep it around $200 for a good PSU.  I like the EVGA 1300G2 but I have heard about bad capacitors being used in the RM line of PSUs in the Corsair line up.  I have never had a single problem with my HX750 - it just can handle the setup now.  If I had the extra funds sitting around I would get a AX1500i and call it a day.

 

Please let me know your thoughts.

Don't buy anything more expensive or more powerful than you need. Your wallet doesn't like it. If 750W can't do it, 850W should be able to. You likely won't need more than that, even with overclocking on the CPU and GPUs.

These are all excellent units. If you find another 750W + PSU you like the looks/price of, feel free to link it for feedback.

Don't buy anything more expensive or more powerful than you need. Your wallet doesn't like it. If 750W can't do it, 850W should be able to. You likely won't need more than that, even with overclocking on the CPU and GPUs.

I'll just go ahead and throw the HX850 in the ring as well, just as nice PSU as the AX860, but it's only semi-modular and 80+gold instead of platinum.

There are lots of these sorts of units to choose from. RM850, Seasonic X-Series 850W or Platinum-Series 860W. Many to choose from. The units I listed are the best I can think of, but the others (like these) are perfectly acceptable as well, and should save you some money.

So I saw Linus' video about actual power usage and that is why I didn't buy a new PSU when I got the second card.   But I'm clearly having power issues.  I need to find a way to measure accurately how much power is being used under gaming loads.  I don't really care about benchmarks but using the extreme power supply calculator it is saying that I need atleast 853W and as recommending an RM1000.  I have overclocked the CPU to 4.4 GHz on the 3770K and I have put the original gpu to stock clocks till i get this sorted out.  

 

so is going for the 1300w evga a stupid idea then?  Looking at the efficiency tables most psu's are most efficient around 45-70% usage.  That would put this psu in its sweetspot.  hence the reason I was leaning towards that one.  it is on sale at NCIX for $219 which I think is an awesome price considering the AX1200i is $394 at the same place.

Even if a psu will be most efficient around 40-70% load,you are not going to be putting your system on load most of the time. So it is best to get a psu with wattage close to the whole system load + 10-20% wattage. Anything daemon recommended above is a good option.

1300W is way way more than you need, you'll just be hurting your wallet if you get it. I can't imagine you needing more than 850W for SLI'd 780's, unless you're doing something crazy and exotic.

Except you won't be using ~700W all the time, will you? When you're idling and watching YouTube videos for example you'll be using far less than 50%, and the efficiency will drop. Unless you do intend to run intensive programs almost 24/7. Then it would make sense.

 

Also, the savings from slightly higher efficiency are very small. What matters more is getting a good quality power supply and not spending more than necessary.

Thanks for the feedback guys. This my gaming rig and video editing rig. When it's used it is pretty much pushed pretty hard. Here is the list of components

3770 k OC'd to 4.4 GHz (108 watts on its own according to extreme PSU calculator)

2 x GTX 780 running at around 1200 each

Mcp655 water pump

8 HDD's , 2 SSD and 6 platter

6 USB peripherals

3 x 24" monitors in surround

13 120 mm fans running at an average of 1100 rpm

1 140 mm exhaust fan

I have windows 7 just for gaming and I use OS X for my video editing. I don't use this rig to surf the web or download or anything like that. It is turned on to game or edit then it's turned off. I have a NAS and a MacBook Pro for the other stuff.

Ok, 850W might not cut it. For that many HDDs and fans on top of the overclocking 1000W would make sense.

Ok. Thanks for helping me out guys. I'm probably going to get the 1300 because it's on sale for 204 right now at NCIX. Then if I upgrade and add another card I won't need to worry.

I have the HX1050 gold.. but i dont recommend it because the fan profile is obnoxious... other than that very stable power for 2 titans. I'd just get a seasonic platinum if i could do it over again.

I would expect 175 to be too high.. I bought my HX750 brand new for $130. Granted, I don't have custom sleeving, but you have to remember that you are selling used hardware and it probably won't exceed the value of a new unit.

That being said, you're not losing anything by listing it on this forum's classifieds section for 175, but I wouldn't expect someone to pay that much for it..

I would get something like an HX 850 instead.

 

As for selling your current PSU, I would say maybe $30 higher than what it's currently being sold for. But that's just me.

I wouldn't buy the 1300 G2, the fan they use on that particular model is kinda loud and it doesnt have a passive fan so I wouldn't bother with that model. Rather get a 750G2/850G2 or 1000 P2 all of them have a semi-passive mode and a quiet fan
