Settle and Argument for me: Safe to use magnetic screw drivers to build a PC?

I dropped a long screw into my power supply once. I think it's safe to say that the PSU didn't survive.

Compatible with Windows 95

Back when I had my PSU the other way round...

was like ~2008 for me. I was so happy when then did that as I swear everything that could fall into a psu fan up does.

I'm having a disagreement with my friends, I swear I heard Linus say this at one point, but is it not safe to use a magnetic screw driver in your build? I find them terribly convenient, but my friends are saying that it's too dangerous, and that it will corrupt data on your drives.

So, if there is any way you could guys could produce something I could give to them to prove it's safe, I'd appreciate it, I can't seem to find an "official authority" who says it's okay...

It's perfectly safe. You'd need a really strong magnet to screw up a hard drive, so it does nothing but help find lost screws :P

Having to take it out, turn it over, give it a shake until the tiny screw came out :(

*hear more than one thing jingling around inside, oh... shit!*

Yes it is safe. I have always used magnetic screwdrivers on my PCs even when i was learning it and the teacher said..."no no no you will destroy the PC that way" "you will never be able to use the PC again after that." "If that PC does not turn on i will fail you"

Then i press the power button and the PC posts and boots and he looked at me with a half grin saying "it wasn't magnetic was it" and this was more than eighteen years ago when i magnetized my own screwdrivers. A trick i learnt from my granddad. I dont do that any more, i just purchase it already magnetized

I currently own and use this.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

Well one time I put a magnet near my ipod touch 2g and it corrupted a bunch of apps. Had to restore and start from scratch.

They're better than non-magnetic ones, since you can't lose the screws as easily.

Had the tray open I think. Then I bumped it and closed it (since I was kinda pushing on it) and... Yeah. $80 Blu-Ray drive down the toilet.

You make a good point. :P I've learned. Optical drive is the last thing to go in.
