Battlemage - thoughts/opinions?

No. They are entry level cards. Neat for those in the market for that, but im not that buyer. I dont exactly trust intel with long term support with these GPUS.

Intel B series announced. What are your expectations? Anyone gonna buy one maybe?

I assume it'll be $250, perform like the 4060/4060ti, have drive issues at launch that get resolved , and no.  Not buying one.

It would've been a great buy at the time I bought my RX 6600, but doesn't seem like a particularly worthwhile upgrade since I have that one already…?

Makes sense for new buyers. A sensibly priced GPU with 10GB and 12GB VRAM. New AMD and NVIDIA card will probably release with their high end stuff and introduce low end way later in 2025 as they usually do so these Intel cards may make a lot of sense at this time.

To little to late honestly.
250 to be a 4060/7600 competitor a month before the RX 8600?

there isnt a price performance upgrade over alchemist from what was shown?

the B580 needed to perform like a 4060ti to actually be competitive at 250USD next month.
This card would have been interesting 6 months ago.

Nope, no need for a GPU in that tier right now. Plus I know what works and I'd rather not be their beta tester.

Yeah, I agree. It can make sense if you're upgrading, but then again, I'd still wait until AMD and Nvidia have shown their hand as well before making a purchase. If I hadn't been "forced" into purchasing an RX 6600 by my RX 480 dying, this card would be quite tempting.

nvidia wont show its hands for this segment till after the tariff, so it wont ever show its hand practically. the 2GB gddr7 variant of the 5060 is just comepletly DOA as far as I am concerned, and the 3GB variant isnt till at least H2 assuming its even real. , intels only competition will be RDNA 4 next year.

Would an ARC card be a good add-on card for other workloads?

I use ARC for my media server, but I would consider throwing an ARC card in my main PC if I can utilize it as a secondary GPU for stuff like AV1 (I have a 6000 series AMD GPU), RT cores if that's able to be used, or other things

If you believe Intel's numbers, B580 is 10% faster than 4060 (1440p Ultra) which puts it in between that and 4060 Ti. It gets 12GB VRAM vs 8GB for those who worry about that. Do we know the 8600 will release early on or will it be a later follow up part that parts lower in the stack tend to?

They claim B580 is +24% vs A750, with the A750 launching at $289. B580 is cheaper and faster.

getting Arc just for AV1 encoding isn't exactly best thought process, new things from all brands will or already have AV1 support

Fair enough about the launch MSRP, but the a750 was 180USD in July 2023 new with rebates. If it had only recently gone down to 200, I would accept it better. But its MSRP been 200 USD since May 2023, its been almost two years at the 200 usd MSRP. Normally I agree with using launch MSRP vs launch MSRP, but a two year old MSRP seems more valid here.

No, but we have more solid leaks for that version of navi 4x then any of the other versions of RDNA 4, so given RDNA 4 is launching in january, and its the best leaked varient, the odds are that is in the launch line up.

It's always tricky picking a price to compare. Launch, lowest in lifespan, current market? Pricing always trends lower throughout lifespan until stock dries up, like we've seen with 7800X3D. It really doesn't help that Battlemage is so late, stacking on top of Alchemist being late itself.

I have zero interest in them.

First of all, I generally get high mid-range to high-end GPUs, and my biggest use-case is Folding At Home. The last gen didn't support folding at all, no idea if these do, but unless they have put millions into software support and given it high precision maths this time around it will be somewhere between a woeful and a not-supported level of performance.

On top of that, even AMD can't compete in folding atm, but we are hoping for that to change with a big rewrite of folding software. Nvidias CUDA support for folding was funded by Nvidia. AMD HIP support is being done by the Open Source community, so it is taking much longer and will probably be a less-than-ideal solution

Only if I needed something for AV1 encoding and wasn't interested in upgrading from, say, a 3080ti

That being said, I do want to see them succeed. If they can be cost competitive, stable, and performant, they'll push down prices across the board.

I am in the boat of a dead (dying) GPU so I need something new. I've been waiting for a month now without a gaming machine and am getting ready to buy. The problem is, where I am the a770 is $240, the b580 is $290 or a 7600 is $330.

Unless the price drops or the performance is a fair bit better than the A770, that would be what I go with.

Have a 4070 super, so I don't need a new GPU any time soon. I really hope it will be a success, though. Will be neat if they can manage to get a foothold in the market.

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

Assuming the hardware manages the typical generational improvement for any brand of graphics card, with the benefit of several years of getting their drivers caught up, it should be better-than-average for entry-level budget building.  If they do release a B770 later (as some have said) that's also a generational-level of improvement, that could even fit in with the mid-tier market.

I'm rooting for them to succeed, because more competition on the market is always good, but at least for the foreseeable future, I don't see Intel cards being anything more than that.
