295x2, 290x crossfire or 780ti sli?

Go to solution Solved by jmaster299,

Im glad you mentioned this! i had forgotten about microstuttering- something i get now with my old radeon card-.-

I have wanted to give Nvidia a go. So 780sli will probably be the way forward. Also, by july do you think maxwell or price drops will be introduced? If the titan z falls below 1500 pounds in the UK i might have to grab it...

Price drops should be coming, but that will be due to the price drop on AMD cards. Maxwell has been delayed with no exact launch date being officially announced. So don't count on anything Maxwell related until next year. The Titan-Z is sort of pointless. A 780 Ti SLI setup or Titan Black x2 SLI setup will both outperform the Titan-Z and for less money.

Im building a enthusiast grade PC in july and just wondered what setup would be the most powerful? I will be gaming but also photo/video editing using Adobe. So i need to know whether Nvidia runs better on adobe still? (Running a 3440x1440 monitor)

780ti sli is going be the most powerful in most cases.

Not a lot of benchmarks out there for that, but this post on the Adobe forums should help. Like the two people above me said, looks like the 780 Ti is still the best option. In games a 780 Ti SLI setup beats a 295X2 and 290X x2 Crossfire setup as well.

@TeriyakiTurtle I'd prefer personally sticking with nvidia's solution, others may vary.

I think you need to establish between needing & wanting before you build this machine. You're making a huge decision to spend over 1 grand of money just on 2 graphics cards not too mention another grand on that monitor which you're hinting towards.

In the benches i have seen the 295X2 'wins' but they haven't OC'ed the 780ti's. so two EVGA superclocked cards would definitely beat the 295x2 right?

There are a couple games where the 295X2 gets higher frame rates, but you need to look at more than just FPS numbers. Frame Time with the 780 Ti SLI setup is significantly faster than the 295X2. High frame times is what causes microstuttering, which as long been a major issue for AMD. Achieving an extra 5fps over the competing Nvidia card doesn't mean anything if you have to suffer through constant stuttering.

Newer (R9 290s) and their AMD drivers have brought down microstuttering to levels that cannot be perceived as different from their nVidia rivals. As such, this is really not a point of advantage for Team Green anymore. I own a pair of Titans used in SLI, I've been with a Team Green since my Mars card (pair of GTX295s)... but the AMD R9 295x2 is pretty formidable at higher resolutions (4K and and multiscreen). Quite honestly, even with my water cooled Titans in SLI, I can not match the 295x2 in 4K with Crysis3 or Battlefield4.

At 4K R9 290X CrossfireX is significantly faster than 780 Ti SLI.
In HardOCP's review the 290X Crossfire setup outperformed the 780 Ti SLI setup in all tests conducted. The 3GB frame buffer on the 780 Ti poses a very real issue at 4K as well, often causing in-game stuttering.

AMD's cards seem to really come into play at higher resolutions. Im looking at the LG34um95 reviewed by linus but the input lag is putting me off and 4k isn't justifiable. I might go with a multi-monitor setup in the end... But the benefits of Nvidias technology is making me side with them. I hate the childishness with creating specific technologies for each company and having to decide between them.

That's completely untrue. In fact AMD's new Crossfire DMA engine (which Nvidia intents to replicate with Maxwell) not only improved scaling but significantly reduced frame latency.

the Radeon R9 295X2 presented a dominant performance with gaming frame rates that were both fast and surprisingly consistent! Anyone that debates the value of the storm created by PC Perspective and other sites about smooth, low variance frame times needs to be taken off the Internet. We, as a community, forced a company to recognize its faults and fix them and because of that we have a much better product with the R9 295X2 than we would have otherwise. AMD has progressed enough to even offer better frame pacing that NVIDIA's SLI in several instances including Battlefield 4 and Bioshock Infinite.

Performance in eyefinity is also significantly ahead that of Nvidia surround. With The 290/290X you do get unique features like TrueAudio & Mantle.

Eyefinity is mcuh more mature than Nvidia Surround as well, easier to use and offers more functionality.

Check out Linus's review of the new Samsung & Asus 4K monitors, input lag is actually lower than comparable 1440p monitors.

A lot of people fail to mention this but the R9 290X was designed from the ground up for 4K. That's why AMD equipped it with a 512bit memory buss and 4GB VRAM.

@GPUXPert we all know the story nvidia is good at standard resolution but the higher the res the better amd will score and this is going on for years

example:

1080p is standard if you only play on this nvidia will get a little ahead depending on type of games

1440p, 1600p and 2160p will be in the favor of amd since they are used to work with bigger resolution not only for pc, they are leading in the professional market when it comes to high resolution and what it takes to handle it.

Even if i had the budget, i wouldn't buy a 1500$ graphics card. Go with the 780Ti.

I read the title in a wrong way... Anyway i would go with the 780 Ti SLI.
