Hi My ram usage is abnormally high. I was able to get metafile down to 4mb by using RamMAP's empty functions.

This ram usage doesn't appear in performance monitor or task manager process lists. I even tried process explorer.

How can I find what's causing it? Even standby mapped file is ridiculous.

Here's how it looks after the emptying. All programs still run and the private mem use matches the process list.

I've left comp running overnight. I'm not sure where it's coming from.

Memory is made to be used, just leave it alone.

Both metafile and mapped files are types of caching, and they make your system faster. If processes need more memory Windows will free up the space.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What's a rammap and what's a metafile...?

it looks like you're literally looking for problems where there arent any.

I don't trust windows to free up the space. What if it misjudges priority and the program I'm actively using isn't getting 100% of its desired standby space.

I literally have proof of this with radeon settings not freeing up its 12GB ram use while getting out of memory errors.

You're confusing cache and program memory. I guarantee when you were running out of memory there were basically zero cached files left in memory.

What happened with Radeon Settings was a problem with program memory. It was using too much memory and never giving it back to the operating system. Windows will never take away program memory without the program's permission, because Windows can't know if the program has a legitimate reason to need that much memory or if it's misbehaving.

Memory used for cached files behaves entirely differently. Windows will throw out cached files at a moment's notice specifically to enable Radeon Settings to gobble up every last bit of your memory, because as mentioned before, Windows can't know if it's working right.

TL;DR: Worry about the memory usage of programs.
