AMD Wouldnt...

ive been hearing alot of talking about polaris cards being unsupported soon, but i dont think amd would do that for two simple reasons: 1. the 470-480 and 570-580 are two of the best budget 4-8gb cards on the used market for cheap and 2. they still preform great to this day. but you can make argument that the r7 and r9 series (specifically the r9 390 and fury x) still preformed great yet got driver suport taken away anyways, but i wanted to know what you guys thought of it?

(pc if the parts get here in time): ryzen 7 3700||gigabyte gtx 1070|| 16 gb ddr4|| SanDisk Ultra 3D 512GB 2.5 ssd||MSI b450m pro-vdh max||2013 corsair cx750m|| hp pavilion case||

I don't see how this makes any difference in whether AMD would drop driver updates for them either way.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Its pretty routine for AMD and NVIDIA to drop old architectures.  There comes a point where its just not worth maintaining, particularly if those cards don't support the modern features games start using anyway.

I mean were talking about a company who said they are dropping Windows 10 support on future CPUs.  They're clearly streamlining their drivers all around.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

i can see that, the only reason i was questioning it is because nvidia to this day still supports the 750 ti even tho it sucks in almost anything accept esports titles at low.

That may be good reasons for you, but I think AMD just don't care for 7y+ old products that make them 0 profit

It's not about the performance of the card. It's about when the architecture was released and when cards with it were last launched - that determines the window of support for the products.

Nvidia has supported Maxwell (even though the GTX 750 Ti is a 700 series card, it's actually Maxwell, same as the 900 series) for much longer than most thought they would - it's already been 10 years. It's kinda weird that they haven't axed support, honestly. My personal theory is that it's due to the Nintendo Switch and other Tegra products that use Maxwell - since they need to keep bringing game support and security updates for the Switch anyway, continuing them for the rest of Maxwell is less of a hassle.

The reason the 750 Ti is still supported is that it's Maxwell based. Nvidia supports cards based on the architecture since AFAIK the bulk of the driver development is for the underlying architecture, not the individual die, so a 750 Ti doesn't add much dev work if they're already planning on supporting the GTX 980 Ti.

Do remember that the RX 480 was released almost 8 years ago at this point, it's had a pretty good run. Nvidia's architectural support window is roughly 10 years, so dropping support for this card wouldn't be too out of the norm, especially since AMD does have a history of not providing driver support for as long as Nvidia. Considering how prevelant the Polaris cards are, it's likely we get another ~2 years out of them, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they dropped support for them relatively soon.

Honestly, they were talking about dropping Vega support years ago, I thought they already had.  If Vega is gone, it stands to reason Polaris will go too.

Per Anandtec November last year:

Quote

For AMD users keeping a close eye on their driver releases, they’ll likely recognize that AMD already began this process back in September – though AMD hasn’t officially documented the change until now.

As of AMD’s September Adrenaline 23.9 driver series, AMD split up the RDNA and GCN driver packages, and with that they have also split the driver branches between the two architectures. As a result, only RDNA cards are receiving new features and updates as part of AMD’s mainline driver branch (currently 23.20), while the GCN cards have been parked on a maintenance driver branch – 23.19.

The problem with this is that their APUs were still using Vega until fairly recently.

supports < = > drivers are available.

they may stop developing new versions for an 8 year old architecture, that doesnt mean they all suddenly stop working.

the HD5450 still works on windows 11 with some WHQL driver released many years before win11.

Because one is still somewhat more relevant and recent even if it's 41% the speed of R9 390,

yes AMD and their CUDA cores, always they've been desireable for productivity,

unlike Nvidia, which is mostly great price/performance dealbreaker with generous amounts of VRAM, amirite?

The drivers are already pretty much only updated if there's some critical bugs or some very popular game crashes.

When AMD drops support you just won't get driver improvements, you'd still be able to play games even new ones if they support the platform.  A lot of games will support Polaris as it's very similar to the chips on Xbox consoles so if the game is ported from xbox or backwards, they'll have shaders and all that included in the game, making it easy to support Polaris cards.

AMD and Nvidia don't care about you and your old GPU. They want everyone to buy new and the much older cards to not make it in someone else's hands who can use it. They want money and they want to force it from you.

yes.. that is totally what's happening to 8 year old GPU's.. it is unacceptable how they arent actively developing new driver releases for your decade old hardware.

even with enterprise servers 8 years is a quite exceptional service life.

yet the 1 year older 750ti has more support than 1 year younger higher performance series card doesn't,

Don't forget you have many small businesses still using 15+year old hardware and software that works perfectly fine, but one new simple needed thing with special requirements means that the whole entire setup must replaced.

They are not using software that uses DX13

cool.

Dropping support for this GPU wont mater for another 5 years when games start making API calls it cant handle.

Also the 760ti has not been supported for 5ish years. The first time this was an issue was with RE8. ALL other games I ran, ran.
using the 750ti like its part of the 700 series and not the 900 series as a counter example is so weird.
And its not like maxwell will continue to get support either.

Yes its about money, but also, the amount of these cards running in the wild on PCs expected to run software that will come out tomorrow is infinitesimal.

I missread serviced and the sentence and assumed that it's work that I may have done, which is something I do sometimes. Just my brain having a dyslexic moment.
