4070 is not an upgrade, 4070 Ti is a very small upgrade (+17% according to TPU's GPU database), 4070 Ti Super is a light upgrade (+28%).

Not a great time to be forced to upgrade a broken 3080 I'm afraid.

what do you consider an upgrade exactly? cuz if a 30% performance improvement is considered light then you need a 4090/7900xtx

gaming system: R7 3700X @ 4.25Ghz cpu / B450 STEEL LEGEND mobo / 4x8gb corsair Vengeance @3333Mhz ram / RX 7900XTX pulse gpu / Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3 cpu cooler /Coolermaster Qube 500 case / Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 12 1500w power supply

laptop: Dell xps 9510, 3.5k OLED, i7 11800h, rtx 3050 ti, 2x16gb DDR4 @ 3200Mhz, 1TB main drive, 2TB add in ssd

It depends on how much the upgrade costs, but a 4070 Ti Super is around $800 and if the OP had a working 3080 (which unfortunately they don't) then I'd consider that a very poor value upgrade @ 28%.

My own assessment is that there's nothing worth upgrading to from a working 3080, until you can spend around $500-$600 and get at least +50%. So, if you have a 2060, for example, a 7900 GRE is +152% faster and I consider that a decent upgrade for $550. Obviously it depends on circumstances, if you're struggling to play games at 4K, then your idea of value is going to be rather different to mine.

It depends what you're trying to achieve, how long you want the card to last (e.g. is it just a stopgap until the new cards are out) and how well the 3080 met your requirements.

If I had a 3080 and it died tomorrow, would I buy a used one to replace it? No, because that might die tomorrow too and I just lost 2x 3080. Would I buy a 4080 / 4080 Super? No, because they cost $1K.

If I was content with a small downgrade, I'd get a RX 6800 for around $360, because it gets you near enough to the 3080 at the smallest possible cost.

If it had to be nvidia, then a 4070 or 4070 Super, as close to $500 as possible, for the same reason as the 6800.

If I wanted a meaningful upgrade and it had to be nvidia, then I guess a 4080 Super, because the increase in price between the 4080 Super and the 4090 isn't worth the performance unless you HAVE to get every last frame with max settings and ray tracing enabled.

No. I don't live in the US, so I just used newegg and amazon for the new prices.

Only a 4070Ti Super will be a reasonable upgrade, a 4070 is mostly equivalent to a 3080 (with 2GB VRAM more if you had the 10GB initial version)

If you're not in need of RT you should look at AMD cards and get a 7900XTX, that'll be a more serious upgrade

AMD R9  7950X3D CPU/ Asus ROG STRIX X670E-E board/ 2x32GB G-Skill Trident Z Neo 6000CL30 RAM ASUS TUF Gaming AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition GPU/ Phanteks P600S case /  Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 ARGB cooler/  2TB WD SN850 NVme + 2TB Crucial T500  NVme  + 4TB Toshiba X300 HDD / Corsair RM850x PSU/ Alienware AW3420DW 34" 120Hz 3440x1440p monitor / ASUS ROG AZOTH keyboard/ Logitech G PRO X Superlight mouse / Audeze Maxwell headphones

You'd need to look at some review roundups for the 4070/4070 Super, because there's a lot of different models.

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4070-founders-edition/

Also, check the warranty length.

I suggest the Asus TUF RTX 4060 which is quite an upgrade from a paperweight and should be plenty for Minecraft and COD at 900p

The Microcenter store 2km south of the Plinius crater central peak is selling it for $150 right now

They have no bad reviews so it should be safe to buy from there
