Melted PCIe Connector on Cooler Master 850 v2 Power Supply

I work at a repair shop called Rob & Pete Computer Geeks. A customer came in with a cyber power pre built that after a few years of use stopped showing a display. The integrated graphics worked, but not the 3080. I checked the cooler master power supply, and the pcie connector is melted on the power supply side. Luckily, all the other parts seem undamaged.

My PSU was super hard to fully insert modular cables on the PSU side, I actually caught my error later on. Could be the same thing.

I had a Cooler Master PSU release magic smoke on me before, only brand I've ever had do it. Also didn't take out any other components. Looks like an over current protection failed and/or a loose connector on the PSU side over time finally shorted and melted, similar to that of the 4090s.

This was built by cyber power so doesn’t look great for them if it was builder error

Ya I never fully trust power supplies that aren’t evga or seasonic. A pretty serious failure. Thankfully, all the other components survived.

Every company, including EVGA and Seasonic, have the potential to make garbage or at least sub-par products. Other companies exist that make decent or high performance units. Many of EVGA's higher end units are manufactured by Super Flower, which is another power supply manufacturer that you can buy from.
