DNS for home lab ideas

I'm looking for an easy-to-setup DNS server for my home network. I can remember the IPs of all the different things running in the house, but the kids and GF can't, so I am looking for a way to do this network-wide and not device-to-device because that would take forever if there were a change.

if it is only for your GF and Kids,  I would try adding alises to ips in hosts file first.

PiHole can do it.

What about a happy median? Give everything useful hostnames. Easy and effective.
