Does it make sense to get a 4K monitor for gaming with a mediocre GPU?

mCode

Hello,

I have a 6750XT and play games like Cyberpunk. I was wondering if getting a 4K monitor would make sense at all or if I can adjust some settings to make it appealing and still get to 60FPS.

Native 4k is not gonna happen in games like Cyberpunk with that card. If you blast the FSR to worst looking option then yeah you can probably get it to work but it will look like shit.

1440p is generally all you need for video games, as in my experience 4k only helps boost the crispness of huds with text during gaming. Additionally, you wouldn’t be able to play most games at 4k with a mediocre graphics card, as lots of games nowadays would require too much vram to even load the 4k textures, much less actually drive that resolution.

You can get a Cyberpunk slideshow at 4K 🙂

But you can also use the 4k monitor to game at 1080p without too much trouble as 1 1080p pixel is exactly 4 4K pixels so you don't have any bluriness due to non native res 🙂

And then watch videos at 4k

I would say no.

Even with good image processing, non-native resolutions on any screen tend to look a bit fuzzy.

That being said, TVs do a better job than monitors at this particular job but that's only because they are designed to display different formats and resolutions. Unfortunately, TVs lack the ultra low response times usually found on monitors.

Is this just for gaming or would you gain an advantage from having 4k for other uses?

I think there are two paths to gaming on 4k without a high power GPU. As mentioned earlier you can do integer scaling of 1080p content if you want crispy pixels. Otherwise make use of upscaling options. I think it really depends on the game which of these options work better. More modern games probably would look better with upscaling. Integer scaling might be more suited to older or pixel stylised graphics as opposed to photorealistic.

Assuming here you can find a 4k monitor with some refresh rate to it for a better gaming experience.

BTW I gamed at 4k with a 3070 for quite a while. The 3070 is only a bit faster than a 6750XT. It'll be fine as long as you keep settings realistic for the hardware.

As always, it depends.

If you go with a 27" monitor, 1080p still looks great when used on a 4K monitor and can be used in games where native 4K or 4K with FSR doesn't quite cut it. For everything else you do, you still get the advantages of 4K.

If you go with a 32" monitor, 1080p won't look as good and is imo not really worth the huge visual downgrade.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

i got a 4k monitor back when i had a gtx 1070 (so about 5 years ago)

since then all my games have looked awesome, with the downside being that you'll always feel your hardware isn't up to par, pushing you do to things like shunt modding just to get a bit more performance
can't really say i regret buying it tho

I bought a 43" 4K TV as my monitor during the work-from-home days. For non-gaming, just having that acre of pixels to spread things out in was incredibly helpful. (I use FancyZones to break it up into four 1080p Aero Snap zones.)

It's hooked up to a PC with a 6700k and a GTX 960. Older games were okay at native 4k, but anything relatively demanding ran at 1080p which was fine.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

my brother's 3060 ti is on par with your 6750 xt, i think it can run cyberpunk at 4k high settings, my brother plays that game on his 4k tv with ray tracing off and it runs smooth, not sure about fps as he doesn't really use a counter but i guess it's around 50-60fps.

BTW, when you mentioned your gpu as "mediocre" in the title i thought it would be something like my 1050 ti, i would be happy with a way less powerful 6600

I have RX 5700 XT and 4k monitor(32") Its plenty games it can't play native 4k, but some you can, just maybe not at max settings.  (To reach 50-60 fps)

For plenty games where it put the rendering resolution to 70/75/80%, with or without FSR. I have played plenty games that way and it looks fine.

Worth noting I have not played Cyberpunk spesifically.

I can come with a more detailed list of some games and what settings I played at, if someone wants to.

Benefit of 4k is bigger outside of games, than in games is my opinion.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.
It matters that you don't just give up.”
