GPU not sitting in the PCIe Slot correctly

Go to solution Solved by TryRestart,

Well another update:

Found out why the problem occured...

MSI really fd up on those SATA Ports.

They put in a slight gap inbetween the ports - on my new Asus Strix there is no gap between them making them lower than on the msi gaming edge. Why would they do that though

Hello guys,

as stated in the title the problem i have is that my RX 7900 XTX Sapphire Pulse ist too long for my Motherboard.

The SATA slots of my X570 MSI Gaming EDGE are too tall and my GPU just sits ontop of them and i can't get it into the PCIe Slot completely - it's only in for about 3/4 yet hits the contacts enough to be read correctly.

The most errors i think i am getting from this are my error LEDs showing being stuck on VGA after exiting BIOS and trying to boot back into windows. -> this did not happen with my rtx 3070 that fit in entirely, and my discord streams crashing all the time or the game i am streaming -> happens the most with cs2, valo and lol, did not happen in KH3.

I already reseated everything i got inside, but havent tried to change out the RAM (tried single sticks + different slots), change the gpu (got a gtx 980 in my dads pc) and change the cpu (also got a 5600x in my dads pc), i also tried removing m.2 ssds one by one and also without a single one inside yet didn't help.

Is there anything i can do about this if all those fail too but to get a new mobo, is probably my oldest part in the PC and also cheapest. Might also be the GPU but i will only find that out later - will also try the gpu in my dads pc.

Thanks for reading and maybe being able to help in any way.

Edit: This also happens with default BIOS settings as i thought it might be from my slight undervolt and very little RAM OC - also errors started to happen after i updated the BIOS, updating it last week didn't solve it.

Damn.. Looks like maybe MSI messed up in this case. M2 + chipset heatsink SATA connectors looks too tall, also others having similar issues.

@TryRestartJust make sure its not hitting the chipset heatsink/M2 heatsink instead of the SATA port. Might be worth checking with otu that installed:

Well lets say i have already done that as my m.2 ssd blocks it from being screwed in properly (m2 has its own heatsink) so that didn't help.

I also tried this and tried to do the same things as before (boot after exiting bios and stream on discord) both errors i know i have constantly didn't go away, the boot problem did not occur as often as in the top slot though. So that helped with one thing a little bit.

To properly tell you the problem is that everytime i turn on my PC i first see a - blinking with the motherboard LEDs showing VGA and BOOT lighting up and turning off and then windows booting up, but when i exit bios and try to boot anything (also tried booting from USB, while either having no SSD in or having it in a different slot then the top one) the - just persists to be on the screen and only the VGA LED turns on and it only goes through to boot windows sometimes. The rest of the times it's stuck in a bootloop

Yes that is true, and i knew that before i tried the lower slot. CPU-Z also correctly showed that.

PCIe 4.0 extension for vertical mount... or return the motherboard if possible. Though I would probably argue with MSI that this is a major design flaw and I would try to demand replacement for another model at least.

But the second long slot is only x4 bandwidth, it'll lower the card performance significantly on Gen4, and cripple it on Gen3, we're  talking about a 7900XTX...

Really bad board design... 😞

I know, but then there's only using a riser left or getting another motherboard

Gen3 riser is the cheapest solution (less than $30), then Gen4 riser ($70+), finally new mobo ($150+)

Yeah, the weird thing is i never noticed it until i properly examined it after the crashes have risen... I always forgot about the click when i assembled it with it but just magically noticed that the lock was open when i took it out and reinserted it and tried to get it to click. The moment i try to press the gpu in a little harder i just scuff up the SATA ports and nothing gets through the "gap" between the gpu and the sata port, not even paper.

Well i will try it on another mobo where i know it should work on and see if issues persist, if not then welp MSI doesn't support long GPUs on that motherboard.

Vertically mounting it is something i thought off once but cause of temps don't really wanna do it. I could exchange the mobo tho if it is it that creates the problems.

Last ditch effort if you cant return the motherboard and if you wanted to give this a try; if youre ~1mm or less off, take some sandpaper to the points of contact and take them down some, if you can manage to lower them enough without going too far and if youre not using those sata ports and manage to just get the GPU to click into place, then it should be fine? Just remember to give the mobo a good clean before using it again if you do do this

I've thought of that too lol, i don't use the ports but in my opinion sanding it down instead of selling it and just getting something with better vrms (which bothers me a lot on this bord - what i didn't think about when i bought it) sound better for me. The 5900x is really great and it performs pretty good for the things i do so i don't really need to up the generation.

Edit: Obviously only sell it if works with other gpus and my 7900 xtx being fine in another mobo

Can sell your board to get a new one, X570 (or B550) are cheap now (MSI MEG unify is $210..)

Or just remove the blocking SATA ports...

So update:

I have now tried changing every part of the pc piece by piece with known working parts.

Tried a r5 5500 from my dad - didn't change anything;

gtx 980 doesn't boot so had to borrow a gtx 1070 from a friend - didn't change anything (also did not fit in properly only lower slot, tried both PCIe slots);

changing my RAM from the 32 GB 3600 Mhz kit i have in rn to a 16 GB 2666 Mhz kit from my dad - didn't change anything

removed every expansion card + m.2s one by one - didn't change anything

So i guess after changing literally anything but the motherboard i would say it is the motherboard that gives me the errors
