3060 12gb vs 4060 8gb vs 7600 8gb

Daonebest

I want to upgrade my GPU to last the next 3-4 years. I've Identified these three cards as in my price range, with minor differences in price. However I'm having some difficulty choosing which one.

What Should I go for?

I've checked combability for all three. My specs match. 10th gen I5. 32gb ram. Mid range MSI motherboard. I also have a 750 power supply so power isn't much of a concern. I was just running on an underpowered 1050 ti before because GPU prices were high when I built my PC.

Most of my games run on my current rig. It sometimes struggles though. Halo infinite has caused issues and it sometimes struggles in VR. I also want to play helldivers 2.

If you are doing anything at all outside of gaming, get the 3060 12 GB. The VRAM is FAR more useful than you can imagine.

rd2 and stalker 2 are other demanding games I want to play in the near future

The only thing I do outside of gaming is some CAD, which I can also run fine on my laptop.

oh my poor brother

anyways the 4060 should be fastest, the prices actually check themself out:

(though the RX 7600 isn't that much behind in raster performance it seems)

VRAM can be a waste if it's 1080p or if it's not that fast of a card,

they're only like 30% faster than GTX 1080, which is significant, but same significant 30% VRAM bump wouldn't really be justified, because with that logic a bump from 1080 to 4090 would leave 4090 having 33GB instead of 24GB which it has

Welcome to stable diffusion, where the 3060 12 gb kicks ass and is highly regarded as the #1 budget GPU if you want to get into AI

(and the next worthy successor is the 4060 Ti 16 GB)

Modern reviewers treat GPUs like toys. They are FAR more than that.

As a 3060 owner, it's not that useful. RDR2 doesn't use that much VRAM and stalker 2 neither I'm pretty sure

agreed. When I'm playing even FH5 on high at 1440p it doesn't use more than 6gb

My pick would be a 6650 xt if you don't need the AV1 creature comforts since it should be cheaper. Then again, a used 2080 ti should be around the same price

ah yes, AI, the thing that 95% of average users never really use

I was responding to a person who claimed that more VRAM isn't useful on lower tier cards, which is objectively false if you don't use GPUs exclusively as toys

I play palworld at 1080p and it consumes 6gb of vram on my 3060.  8gb vram cards are dead in 2 years.

yes but that's not related to the post. Unless I missed something

some workloads are GPU intensive but not VRAM intensive

OP is doing CAD which runs fine on their laptop so it should run fine on a GPU that no doubt, has double the vram

if you don't use GPUs for what the overwhelming majority of people use them for, you mean.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Even if your only use case is gaming, you should be aware that the gap between the 3060 and the 4060 is actually shrinking instead of following the historical trend of going up.

8 GB makes you hostage of developer optimization. Developers heavily prioritize consoles. Hint: current generation consoles have 16 GB VRAM. Make of that what you will.

yeah I think the only thing holding on to 8gb vram is that afaik all the mobile gpus still only have 8gb vram.
I expect the very next gen of mobile gpus will stop that nonsense and we will see 12-16gb models finally

and what are the below 8GB GPU users supposed to do? go eff themself and "I guess I won't be able to play this game"?

sounds very strategic to make game so demanding it's likely not to get bought just because average hardware cannot run it..

So, In conclusion. The 3060 12gb is perhaps looking like the best option? It may fit the rest of my hardware best too in terms of age
