3060 12gb or 4060 8gb 🤔

I am currently rocking a 1440p 144hz monitor. I been needing a serious upgrade to my main components like gpu, motherboard, and cpu. I have the motherboard and cpu picked out but I can't decide on the gpu. It's between the 3060 12gb or the 4060 8gb. More vram or better card. They're the same price at $300. What should I go with??

If those are the two options, then I would recommend the RTX 4060 over the RTX 3060 12GB. The reason is that the graphics card is faster. There are some games where, if you crank settings, you run out of VRAM with the RTX 4060, and so the RTX 3060 12GB ends up winning, but those are rare, and you can just turn down settings to compensate. In games where you don't run out of VRAM, the RTX 4060 is usually about 15% faster. So with the RTX 3060 12GB, you're basically betting on the card being faster for future games that haven't released to make up for the fact that it's slower today, which is usually a dubious proposition. It's generally wiser to just get the product that's already faster to start with, as we don't know what the future will hold. On top of that, it has features like AV1 encoding and DLSS Frame Generation that the RTX 3060 12GB doesn't have.

With that said, is there a reason you aren't considering the RX 6700 XT? It's faster than both, and also has 12GB of VRAM. And there's a model for sale in the US right now for $330.

Thanks I really appreciate that info. One reason is because I am just getting into pc upgrading and building so I'm not familiar with AMD yet and I already have an nvidia card. Also I'm on a tight budget since I have to buy a motherboard and cpu. I'm upgrading from a gtx 970 so it's a desperate situation lmao.

4060. You won't notice the VRAM difference much, and by the time you do it'll be time to upgrade to a better card.

I personally wouldn't go AMD; I've tried, several times, and it's simply not as stable as Nvidia across the same amount of titles. Nvidia just works.

Or a 6800(xt) which is also around that price used and is alot faster than a 6700xt let alone a crappy 4060

3080 also goes around that price and is also alot faster than both the 3060 and 4060 so if you want nvidia thats also a good used option

Im not sure of how much a gtx 970 goes for but its probably around the same price as a used 8gb rx 570/580 (40-60$) so add that to the budget

Btw what cpu + mobo are you going for? Considering the tight budget something like a used 5600(x) for 70-90$ and a used midranger b3/450 like the gaming plus/tomahawk for ~50$ is a pretty good combo

I would also consider the 7600xt

I feel that I'm aware that amd has better bang for the buck in most cases. But for this time since it's my first run around I'm just sticking with those two options that I'm comfortable with.  😌 I'm just unsure about which one

Why do feel like the 4060 is the way to go?

Most people have a tendency to go team green because of dlss, raytracing, and more features.

As a college student on a budget I'm going for the i5-12600kf and the ASRock B760 Pro RS/D4 ATX LGA1700 motherboard won't either the 3060 or 4060. You can let me know of that's a good combo but I honestly going for something budget friendly that is all compatible and decent performance. I'm not looking comfortable the best of the best parts.

So youd rather pay 300$ for an overpriced new 3060/4060 rather than 300$ for a used rtx 308p that will obliterate those 2 gpus?

Yes even those used rtx 3080 or rx 6800(xt) will be compatible as long as the psu can handle it, also get a z690 since they should be about the same price as that b760

Nah I probably gonna buy the gpu used anyways. Also why the z690 I don't know too much about motherboards yet.

Z690 means you can oc the cpu if you want but most importantly tuning settings are unlocked so undervolting will be much easier than a crappy b board and undervolting is something you absolutely wanna do cause alot of board uneccesarily overvolt the cpu stock

As for the gpu ~300$ gets you used 6800(xt) or 3080 whilst 200$gets you a 6700xt or 3070 but the 6700xt is better

It is the used market so you can do some haggling to lower prices a little
