Cinebench R23 and PBO

I recently got a 5700x and wanted to know if PBO is a worthy thing to turn on. The default is on Auto in Gigabyte Bios.

 

Now I ran Cinebench on both PBO auto and enabled.

 

Auto

Score- 13743 (4.21Ghz sustained speed)

Max Recorded Temperature- 63°C

 

 

Enabled

Score- 14739 (4.45Ghz sustained speed)

Max Recorded Temperature- 76°C

 

So is worth it to keep it on enabled considering I was playing games on a much older 3500 and they were running okay except some titles which demanded more cores. Also do the scores seem okay?

 

Cooler- AK620

Free performance, more or less. Now, you can tune it with Curve Optimizer to try and pull the temps down and boost even further.

That score for PBO on looks about right. PBO on a 5700X basically turns it into a slightly slower 5800X, and the 5800X usually scores around 15,500 in Cinebench R23 at stock.

 

If you don't mind the increased power draw and temperatures, then using PBO on a 5700X makes sense, as it usually gives about a 5-10% boost to performance with no other downsides. You can also tune PBO by adjusting the TDC and EDC values to find an optimal level. Sometimes, Ryzen chips can pull too much current, which causes them to get hotter to a point where they need to reduce clock speeds. So there is a sweet spot where you limit it just enough that it doesn't go too far, which maximizes the performance. But straight PBO is fine, as it's really easy and doesn't require an additional time investment.

 

As @GuiltySpark_ mentioned, you can also use Curve Optimizer to try doing an undervolt to reduce power and temps while potentially boosting more, although this can result in system instability, so requires stability testing.

PBO is a wonderful tool to get free performance by testing the silicon lottery with little drawback. If you go further and manually adjust the curve with frequency and voltage offsets, just keep testing with cinebench. Its easy to lose performance if you start pushing it too far with either a +frequency or -voltage, but its safe to do so.

 

People unnecessarily stress about operating temperature, the reality is that the miniscule increase in power draw is insignificant and running silicon higher in its operating range has no significant impact on its longevity.
