It'll work, but file transfers/transcoding/whatever else will be painfully slow.

a light Linux distro is going to be your best bet to get any kid of performance out of it. something like Xubuntu since it uses XFCE which is a light desktop environment.

Ubuntu has 32-bit (i386) images, and I assume its a gigabit system so should be just fine for storage and file transfer.

Doing more on it would be a stretch though. Single processor systems have been lacking for a long time for anything modern.

Depending on how much electricity costs in your neck of the woods, you might actually spend more in the long run keeping that relic online than you would if you bought a used office desktop or NAS appliance.

It will work, but it might not be economically worth running.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

this is a good point to consider with an older system like that. power efficiency has come a long way on general use computers.
