Worth upgrading from 3080 to 4070 Ti Super?

kingmustard

... or is the only real successor at least a 4080 / 4080 Super / 4090?

I bought my 3080 FE for £650 (RRP) back in 2021, which is around £765 today after inflation.

It would sell for around £450-£475 on eBay (closer to £420-£445 after fees and delivery).

The 4070 Ti Super starts at £770 and the 4080 Super starts at £960.

So moving from a 3080 to a 4070 Ti Super would cost around £350. For that, you'd get a faster card, a lot more VRAM and frame generation. Wondering if that is hard to justify, though.

An alternative is the 7900 XT (which goes for £720 and includes Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora).

7900XT maybe but the 7800XT would basically be a side grade.

4070ti super would be a good upgrade aswell.

Depends on what do you want to with your system. 4090 would make sense if you were to for example gotten a G9 Neo too.

Personally, 3080 to 4070 Ti S doesn't make a lot of sense, maybe if you can flip 3080 for a high price, but I'd wait for 5000 series for a more meaningful upgrade

This gen of cards is kind of a dud. I would personally wait until 5000 gen next year but it'll probably be really expensive.

I think this gen of cards are actually really good if you don't take price into account. The 4090 is a crazy fast card compared to last generation even if the price is pretty crazy.

I'm with the others. Prices really kill the desire to upgrade this generation. I'm personally holding out hope that Intel's 2nd gen ARCs actually bring enough to the table to drive down prices a bit more.

10 months ago when I sought an upgrade to my 3080 I didn't look at anything slower than a 4080 (+50% performance), and ended up getting a 7900XTX

That still holds I think, and 7900XTX price dropped significantly, 4080 not that much

I always try to play with ray tracing on but it lowers my frame rates to 60fps (that's at 4K output with DLSS set to balanced (1253p internal) in most of the ray-traced games I play), and I refuse to play games at 60fps when I'm so used to the smoothness of 100-120fps, so I feel frame generation is my only real option at the moment.

However, even the new (Super) prices are high, so it is unfortunately hard to justify.

i'm in the same boat, i was only looking at the 4090 but theres the 12vhpwr connector the 4080 has the same cost per frame as a 4090 that took it out of the equation.

With current prices only the 4080s make sense, if that connector's here to stay i'll likely wait til next gen to at least see what amd has to offer.

7900XTX is still $200 less than 4080 for same to better raster performance, way better cost per frame

You just lose on heavy RT, FSR is a tad worse than DLSS but usable at 4K (and even DLSS isn't that good at 1440p)

Price can be accounted for but for some it isn't really a factor. If you are mostly concerned about performance then the price might not matter too much if you can easily afford the high cost of a 4090.

The 7900 XTX is £850 in the UK, and the 4080 Super's RRP is £960 when it comes out in a few weeks, and considering the 7900 XTX's performance is between a 4080 Super and a 4090, it is a good deal (especially considering the RRP of the 4080 is £1,200).

The problem is I am unwilling to spend that kind of money on a GPU, unfortunately.

I am going to limit myself to £750 or so (and keep to that price, including inflation, going forward).

If I were to upgrade my 3080 now, £750 or so currently limits me to the 4070 Ti Super (£770) or 7900 XT (£720 with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora for free), but neither appear to be a worthwhile upgrade to my 3080 (consider I'll only make £420-£445 selling it).

Based on the advice above, I think I shall.

Based on NVIDIA's pricing the past few years (4070 £510 RRP, 4070 Ti £800 RRP), for £750, I will be looking at a 5070 Ti, I guess.

Neither AMD nor Nvidia really care about the mid-range enthusiast gamer anymore. it's all AI and such. This is why Intel really needs to succeed with their 2nd gen ARCs. Unless they bring some actual competition to the market, then I don't see anything else happening to bring down prices in the foreseeable future 😕

Intel won't really care for gamers anymore if they find a more profitable market in AI as well...

Im also tempted to upgrade from a 3070, but then again i don't need to, i get 150+ fps in all my games... better wait for 5000 series i guess..

3070 ‐‐> 5070/Ti makes more sense imho

really no need to upgrade every gen nowadays
