IEM's tend to be tuned much better than their closed back headphone counterparts, it's just super hard to tune a closed headphone well. Given how... not great the DT770's are tuned finding IEM's that sound substantially better won't be an issue. I haven't heard of XENN before but given the other IEM options around DT770 prices i would rather use IEM's are probably the way to go. Do bear in mind that IEM recommendations are much more personal because of just how different ears are, so something like an Etymotic ER2 might sound substantially better than similar priced closed headphones the fitment is too personal to make them a good one to recommend, same with tons more IEM's

This is going to be purely down to preference.  I have 5+ pairs of affordable IEM's and 8 pairs of closed back headphones.

For my use cases I greatly prefer headphones, not from a sound quality standpoint, however just due to when I'm at the computer I just don't want to wear IEM's.  The only time I use IEM's is when I'm on the go or at night when I go to bed for ASMR.

What I have found with the several pairs of IEM's is that fitment is crucial and potentially more important than anything else, then when something fit's properly you can judge it's audio characteristics.

Headphones in general are easier to get a good fitment.  As to the Beyerdynamic's you are looking at, do you mean the DT700x or the DT770?  I really enjoy everything I've heard from Beyerdynamic and the 770 will cope with a sub-par source IE: onboard audio far better than IEM's.  You will probably need something to drive IEM's that has a low noise floor whereas certain headphones don't give two hoot's about what's powering them.  Namely the Rode NTH-100 can sound 90% as good on a potato as it does with a $1k dac and amp solution.
