Choosing an LED TV

jrkmtf

I’m looking to replace/upgrade a TV in my home and been looking at 65” LED TVs. Pretty much any online discussion about TVs seems to be comparing technologies to each other: LED vs MicroLED vs OLED etc. I know LED backlit is not the “best” picture quality and I’m okay with that. That all being said, is any one manufacturer better than another or does it really just come down to brand preference? In the past I bought Vizio but LG, Sony, and Samsung all have TVs in the same price range.

It comes down to the Panel installed in the Display and the electronics supporting it.

As @FloRolf says Rtings does a fantastic job testing Displays. Here's their Fall 2023 Roundup of 65" Displays

Also important to know is budget? what kind of Content (4k? HDR?) do you want to consume, is it a bright or dark room? and do you want to game on it?

I bought a 55" LG C2 OLED recently on Clearance and Wow!, what a difference compared to the 55" Samsung 1080p panel it replaced. I had to replace the Apple TV it was connected to with a Apple TV 4k (wife appeal factor) and new Ultra 4k HDMI cables to get the eARC working properly between the panel and Sound Bar.

If you're on a budget,

TCL and Vizio have great options. Hisense has an excellent option if you're willing to play the lottery - check RTINGS for the model

Mid-range you can look at Vizio's high end options, and Samsung's QLED (this is still LED backlit, but Quantum Dots give better color)

At upper mid-range you move into LG's C-series OLED televisions and above that is their brighter G-series line-up.

If you've got a fat budget, Sony's OLED is top-tier.

Sony x90k or L

Samsung qn90B. Not c series in 2023 due to ads panel.

Then you have OLED as another option. Sony a80k L. A90K L. A95K. L.

Samsung s90B C.

LG C and G series.

I trust this is helpful

DigitalTrends' Youtube channel is a great great resource for TV reviews and explainers too.

I like smart home and home theater tech.

My 5.1 setup consists of: Sony x90cj 75" TV, Yamaha RX-V4A Receiver, Apple TV 4k gen 2, SVS SB-1000 Pro Sub, KEF Q350 L/R, KEF Q250c Center, KEF Q150 rears.

My smart home is based around Home Assistant.
