Why is my ssd so slow?

DietzDiet

So I have this prebuilt pc with a 1tb kingfast ssd. When I first got it, im pretty sure the boot was pretty fast, it's been like 6+ months and now whenever I boot it, the pc takes like 10 MINUTES to be functional and lag free, as if I login right as it appears the pc is laggy and it takes awhile to go to normal. The ssd usage was also at 100% in performance task manager. How do I fix this? I literally had an hdd that was faster.

Run an anti-virus scan

Check your startup.
And in taskmanager click the 100% disk usage to see which program(s) are using up all the disk.

Also put some specs down, they do matter. A LOT!

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!
I'm just helping YOU to help YOURSELF!

What does crystal disk info say about ssd health ?

What does crystal disk mark say about ssd speed ?

It might have nothing to do with the ssd

I'm willing to swim against the current.

Is the SSD nearly full? That can negatively effect the speed.

It could also be just Windows being Windows...
Mine (W 11) managed to self destruct in 6 months, I couldn't even start in safe mode or do startup recovery (had to do a clean reinstall).
But before it completely died it had a period of about a month where it would take ~5 minutes instead of ~30 seconds to completely load up all of my startup programs.
There was no malware on the PC, nothing fancy installed as I use Windows only for occasional gaming and a few other things,
after the clean re-install I installed the same programs and games I had before and it was back to being fully functional in ~30 seconds...

Tl:DR
As a rule of thumb, make sure you have ~10% free space on your SSD.
If that doesn't help, do a clean Windows reinstall.

Sounds defective.  I've seen a few that just got extremely slow instead of full death.  One of them was new in the box (Kingson)!

I think it could be possible it's related to that but even after windows updates my ssd still feels slow most of the time, and I think even before the ram problem my ssd was still slow.

I didn't do anything special to the OS: didn't use custom ISOs, no debloater scripts, no regeistry editing, no cracked software...
One day it was working fine, next day (probably after an update, not sure) it started taking 10x longer to be fully functional, then about a month later a game crashed and the OS froze, had to hold down power button and after that it just would not boot to Windows anymore... And no it isn't HW failure, since I dual boot and the Linux distro I'm using hasn't had any issues... Like I said, Windows being Windows (stable and reliable, it just works /s 😆 ).

Yeah, I checked for updates multiple times manually, didn't resolve the issues for me.

I spent an evening googling for fixes and didn't find anything useful,
just typical windows troubleshooting steps: update everything, run sfc /scannow, do a clean install...

I tried everything except a clean install, as that would have wasted even more of my time... on something I use for leisure mostly.

Each OS goes on a separate SSD. That way you minimize the chances of Windows update f*** up your GRUB.
First I install one SSD and I install Windows on it.
Then I add the second SSD and install Linux on the 2nd SSD.
From Linux I update GRUB so it can see both Linux and Windows boot partitions.
In BIOS I select the the SSD with the Linux boot manager to be 1st.
Each time I restart / turn on the PC (well in this case a laptop) I'm greeted by GRUB and I have 5 seconds to pick which OS I want to run (if I don't do anything it auto-picks last used OS).

Here is the funny thing, 6 moths ago I bought two new 2TB SSDs (same brand and model) to replace my old two 1TB SSDs, wanted the extra space and a piece of mind.
Linux SSD was cloned from the older 1TB SSD to one of the new SSDs,
and for Windows old 1TB SSD I decided I will not be cloning anything and I just did a clean install of W11 on one of the new 2TB SSDs.
Essentially my Linux install is 2+ years old, and Windows 11 is 6 months old...
Like I said no major issues with my Linux OS in that time period,
a relatively fresh Windows OS install didn't even manage to make it half a year...
They use the same hardware except the SSDs they are one, and the SSDs are pretty much new and healthy.
Oh and I use Linux way more (like 5x-10x more) than I use Windows.
New* 2TB SSD with Windows on it:

*These SSDs are ~6 months old, installed both of them on the same day in my laptop.

Anyhow don't want to derail your thread,
just saying that at the end of the day there is solid chance there is nothing wrong with your SSD but your Windows might need a clean re install...
Also, trying to fix anything Windows related is probably gonna end up eating more of your time than re installing.

Would'nt needing to reinstall windows completely wipe your files?

Yeah of course.
First you'd need to backup any personal data to an external drive / nas / cloud (whatever you like),
and you'd have to install all the programs / games again...
Which makes it a nice little waste of time. But still, it is typically faster than trying to figure out what went wrong with the POS 😆.

As for me personally, like I said I mostly use it for gaming so not much data to backup (game saves are already in the cloud), and my download speeds are pretty good so re-installing games doesn't take too long.

Would this keep the personal files?

It would, but generally speaking it is always a good idea to backup what is important to external storage / nas / cloud before doing a reset.
Also, reset might or might not fix the issue... the only way to be sure it isn't something software related would be to do a clean install.
