What is your new phone charging ritual for the first few charging cycles?

BaidDSB

Maybe the first 3 charging cycles. Do you down it to 0 and then give the first charge to 100? What about 2nd and 3rd cycles?

Used to be the case for old phones. Pretty sure new phones are good to go for all and any use from day one. At least I didn't care about letting phone run out of charge when you first turn it on before charging it to 100%, not since my Z1 compact.

It doesn't matter.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.
It matters that you don't just give up.”

Let it drain fully and charge to 100% but i dont know how many times you would do this.

I quickly settled into the 20-80% charge after and my phone 4 years later still has great battery life but i think it depends on what you keep on your phone.

If the memory is always full i would say your battery life is gna be worse regardless. I know people with newer phones than me but their storage is always full with pictures and stuff and their batteries dont even last the day.

The one thing i dont do is leave the phone plugged in to the charger over night even though android have these optimized charging features

I just plug it in over night regardless. If its low battery it gets plugged in. No rituals. Never had a problem. Never had a battery issue. I did once have a battery replaced on my iphone 5 that I purchased new but to show its age I replaced that phone with a brand new iphone 10 so that is how old that phone was.

How do you stop at 80% all the time?

Lithium era batteries don't suffer the memory effect that Nickel era batteries did, so it largely doesn't matter. Continuous charging when full isn't great but battery management should prevent that and only occasionally top it off.

its not exact, 77% - 83% all counts for me.

But with fast charge within 20 mins its enough to get 75-85%

I know for Samsung, there is a setting to limit battery charging to 85% to limit battery wear. I have this enabled on my phone and had it on my previous phone and never had issues with the battery (a S10+).

Isn't letting battery down to 0 also bad? Just use it normally, bro.

There is no cycle.  There is no need for this odd behavior at all, batteries are fine with all the software in place to monitor charging and trickle this and stop at 80% that.

Yeah, all I know is letting it drain to zero too often isn't great for it, nor is storing it long term (months) at 100 or 0. Otherwise, I've never heard of anything special that's necessary for current batteries.

You do not need to do that on new phones. Their bateries are programed from the factories. However if you buy a replacement battery from iFixit they say that when you replace the battery you need to charge it to 100% and leave it charging for about 3 hours to programe the battery. That does not apply to new phones.

the only time i care about the battery on a new phone is to check if it can be charge limited. if it can, i turn it on, if it doesn't, then i do no other battery "care" i just use it how ever i use it.

You don't need to babysit batteries in 2023. Use it however you want.

Whatever advice you read sounds completely wrong anyway. It's not good for a Liion battery to get to 0%. But even that is not something to sweat over.

Fast charge is wearing out batteries. I'd only use it if in a pinch.

My phone even has an adaptive charge setting that slows down charging at night.

Yeah i have been using only the fast charger for 4 years at 20 mins ish a time and not every day. It seems fine i was worried about using fast charge so often as well.

My charge holds for almost two days with normal use

how do you define slow charging then? 5W? 10W?

Yeah I question even the concern of fast charging on Modern phones these days. I had only ever "super fast charged" my Note 10 (45w) for 3 years including leaving it on the charger overnight every single day and the battery was still fantastic lasting well over a day with Max brightness when I upgraded.

I think it's best just to use the device and not think about it really.

Fast charging would be what manufacturer set as the maximum and is based on cooling, battery chemistry and capacity.

Slow would be anything less. You most likely don't get a Watt number for your phone. But check out what battery features it has. You always can use a power supply with less rating. A dumb USB power supply is 5V/2A. So 10W. But charging would be less since the phone also uses a few Watt depending on use.

My phone is rated at 23W cable and 15W wireless. 23W isn't high to begin with. But most charging is in the many wireless cradles. So it is limited to 15W minus the phone use.

I don't know what the adaptive charging does. If my alarm is set to 6:00, it charges so slow that it isn't full before 5:00 or so. Obviously charge rate depends on how low battery is, and at what time I sleep and put the phone in the cradle. That's why it is called adaptive....
