Here is the list of parts he sent me:

  • Motherboard: Asus Rog Maximus XI Code
  • CPU: Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz 8/8
  • RAM: 32 GB G.Skill 8GB × 4
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB)
  • CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i Pro
  • Power supply: Corsair TX850M
  • HDD: WDC WD20EZRZ-00Z5HBO
  • SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB
  • Monitor: Acer KG271 B 27.2 Inch
  • Keyboard: Ducky One 2 Mini RGB
  • Mouse: Logitech 9402

No more than 600-700 GBP for PC alone. You're going to need to replace the CPU platform on your own, and you're missing an Nvme drive which would be a really great QoL in terms of Windows usage.

And personally I don't touch used peripherals unless if I'm desperate. Out of the 3 things the Ducky is the only one id bat an eye. A lot of ergo gaming mice in the sea that's not weighed like an anchor and the monitor is outdated.

Hello, I need help figuring out if I am about to waste my money or make a good deal instead.

I currently use an old MacBook Pro 2019 (I got it for free) for my professional needs.

However, recently a friend of mine decided to sell his current PC because he is moving to a new country and asked if I wanted to buy it.

He is currently asking for 1600 GPB but said he would also settle for less as he's not trying to make money out of it.

I am not an expert on PC parts, so I would like to get some more informed opinions on the matter.

Country: United Kingdom

Games, programs, or workloads that it will be used for:

  1. Software development with CPU-focused loads
  2. 3D Rendering (ray-tracing)
  3. Light machine learning
  4. Casual gaming (e.g., Satisfactory)

Other details:

Here is the list of parts he sent me:

  • Motherboard: Asus Rog Maximus XI Code
  • CPU: Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz 8/8
  • RAM: 32 GB G.Skill 8GB × 4
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB)
  • CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i Pro
  • Power supply: Corsair TX850M
  • HDD: WDC WD20EZRZ-00Z5HBO
  • SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB
  • Monitor: Acer KG271 B 27.2 Inch
  • Keyboard: Ducky One 2 Mini RGB
  • Mouse: Logitech 9402

Attached are also two images of the peripherals and the PC running.

I tried replicating the configuration on pcpartpicker.com, and my understanding is that he is asking for a bit less than the current prices for the individual parts.

However, the components are not necessarily the newest, for example, by looking at the official INTEL page for the CPU, I can see that it was released in Q4'18.

Thus, I would like to know if the computer will still be usable for a few years or if it is in need of urgent upgrades.

Lastly, I intend to add an additional high-resolution 1440p monitor in the future, but given my use cases, I don't need particularly high refresh rates.

Thank you very much in advance for any help with this situation!!

You have to keep in mind that old cpus and motherboards will increase in price later down the line simply because if you want that particular cpu there aren't alot of places to buy one. The i7 9700k isn't worth all that much at this point in reality.

Damn you're cheap!  600 gbp?

Fine,  you're right.  Just build a new machine, he isn't going to come down that low.

The CPU is definitely not the best, but it would still be an upgrade compared to my current MacBook Pro.

I'll ask him if he's willing to drop the price to around 1k$ then.
Thank you very much for the answer!

It seems clear now that he is asking for way too much.

The lowest estimates I've seen have been at around 600 GBP ~ 750 USD for the PC alone.

I will try asking if he is willing to go down to 1000-1100 USD for the whole set.

Thank you very much, all of you, for all the insightful answers!!

If not, we can come up with a better machine for $1000-$1200 USD if you want.

1600 GBP for lousy 9700k and 3070 ?!?!??! What year is this. Your guy is not trying to make money out of you, he is trying to f**k you over big time, with you hands tied behind your back. Yes, it was a good system back in its days, but by current standards it's easily surpassed by an i3.

Here it will be something like this:

$250 for the GPU

$150 for the mobo+CPU+memory

$30-$40 for the AIO

$50 for the PSU

The storage is basically a gift at this point and probably a huge risk to keep.

The monitor is worth more as spares, but let's call it $25.

Mouse and keyboard 2nd hand are basically like an used condom - complete no-go zone.

Total: $515 So call it $500 and turn it into GBP. Also consider this is quite generous actually. The GPU can be found for $200, the CPU+mobo+16GB memory for $100-$120. That TX850 drops to as low as $35.
