Windows 11 "update and shut down"

How come when i press the "Update and shutdown" button, the computer reboots, updates, and then reboots back into windows and not actually shutting down like i want it to?

happens to me also sometimes.

Windows should download and update on next restart would be more logical. But at times it needs a restart to complete the update and then simply stays on.

So the Update and shutdown seems to get be more like download and reboot.

Been noticing that lately as well.

Always worked for me, it reboots however many times it needs to install the updates but then does shut down.

Maybe the latest update screwed it up since it has more reboots than usual but i haven't don't "update and shut down" on any of my machines for that particular one to check.

That's what it does if you just "shut down". "Update and shut down" is there so that the next time you come you don't need to wait for updates to install before being able to use the PC.

The updates this past week required three restarts to fully install on 2 or our 3 PCs.  I defer my workstation updates until the end of the month just to be on the safe side.  It may be that the multiple restarts prevented it from shutting down.  In both cases I did select update and shutdown but as with others, it stayed on after the updates were installed.

It depends on the update really, but I found that if there is an update that requires certain level of registry change the pc will not perform the final shutdown, I cannot explain why though but I have a guess, maybe @GoodBytes you can weigh in? I have noticed this was a 50/50 thing with updates since early windows 10 but I have been running the Insider Preview since the start of Win10 and intoWin11 so my experience will vary against the release version.

I might need to try, believe I still have a machine or 2 that hasn't done the latest update but so far I've never had it not turn off at the end.

I never paid attention. I don't shutdown my PC.

It goes to sleep when idle or restarts from updates.

Confirmed that this week's update doesn't properly shutdown. Must be a bug with this particular one.

Its always been this way with windows 11 for me, never been a problem when i was on windows 10. 

I ran the windows update troubleshooter yesterday and ill see if that improves anything for the next update.
