1440p (2k) Monitor recognizing as a 2160p (4k) Resolution

Hey Guys, 

 

I recently got an Acer CB272u, which is a 1440p/2k monitor. I tested it on a PS5 and Gaming Laptop prior to shipping it to another location.

The PS5 to my surprise, however, did not recognize the Acer Monitor as a 1440p/2k monitor, but rather a 2160p/4k monitor.

It showed extremely crisp and I can definitely tell the difference from a 2k to 4k quality. I can confirm, visually, it was of a 4k monitor quality.

 

I furthered the test by connecting a Gaming Laptop via the same HDMI port to the monitor.

Again, to my surprise, the resolution showed (3840 x 2160)p/4k. 

 

Now, I am able to reduce the resolution but its default is as shown above.

 

Can someone please explain why both devices are doing this?

Can I assume that both devices are simply pushing out 4k quality although the monitor is capped at 2k?

And therefore, what I am seeing is the image of a 4k signal but on a 2k monitor.

Well, I think you just bought a 4K monitor for a price of a 2K monitor, if it does look like 4K when you look at it.

Yeah, well I do love that since it is an upgrade. I will do more hands-on investigation well I go to its shipped location.

1440p is not 2k
2k refers to 2048*1080 or 1920*1080. as in half the width and height of a 4k screen. 

1440p can be called 2.5k or quadHD (WQHD), as in 4 HD monitors(720), but not 2k.
