Would an 80+ Gold 650W PSU run two 770/280x's?

Hey everyone, so the title is in the question:

 

As for the rest of the planned specs I'm looking at a locked i5, an SSD, HDD, 8GB RAM.

 

I'm currently only buying one GPU but intend to buy a second whenever the respective manufacturers' next generation of cards come along. This solution is better for me for long-term performance because as it stands I cannot afford to invest in a single, better GPU, before people suggest that :P

 

So, would it be fine?

No, it's not enough wattage.

 

I suggest a strong 850W+ 80+ Gold PSU if you don't want it to be loud or hot, but if you are fine with that a 750W is the minimum.

After conducting research, I have to conclude with a no; it would be a big push. I'd go for at least 700-750w.

PC Partpicker estimates 618W, are you really saying they are that wildly inaccurate?

 

I'm also not entirely convinced since most people say a decent 500W PSU suffices for a single-card build, so I doubt a second one will take another 350W

Going with a 750w is probably better though--at least for the 280x's.

Though you both are probably right, I do feel I'm pushing it  a bit and not leaving room for OCing the GPUs. I should probably just man up and spend an extra £15 on the PSU for some more Watts :(

I am, yes.

 

PSU calculators aren't always accurate. They can and will over and undercompensate for certain hardware. You want headroom. Running a supply "balls to the wall" can only shorten it's life, and again, the PSU will get hot. Not warm, hot. I have a Cooler Master Silent Pro M 700W, and when I ran my rig plus an 8800 GTX on it, it got hot. eXtreme PSU Calculator "claims" that the setup would only run about 621W and yet it ran pretty hot. And the Silent Pro M is a very solid unit. It's an extra 15 quid, and it will better prepare you for higher power output cards.

You can, just it would be safer to go with a 750 watt gold.

You sure you're on top of your statistics, that PSU definitely isn't £15 :P

It's a separate sentence. :D Meaning that 15 extra quid isn't much to part with for a higher wattage PSU.

It depends what you do with the cards, if youre planning to throw a custom bios at it and push it to extreme levels when mining well yeah then a 650W won't be enough but just for gaming with the default settings/bios then yeah sure. I wouldn't do prime95 + furmark though

First, go to Cooler Masters PSU calculator: Link. Now that you get the wattage of your total system you can then determine what PSU you will need. Do not forget about the 60% efficiency curve so you won't use more power and waste it. For example a 650W PSU x(times) 60% = 390W for the best efficiency.

 

This website is pretty close to what is calculated  with my Kill-A-Watt meter just about +- 15 watts

Not necessarily. A mild or even decently high oc is doable depending on the psu

He isn't necessarily running the same psu as you. There are better psus that run cooler than the silent pro m at the same load.

Assuming that the 650W has a single 12V rail it could power it.  Here is the breakdown:

Locked I5: 77/84W

GTX 770/R9-280x @ stock: 500W (250W/each, 275W max for the 770, 300W max for the 280x when OC'ed)

584w+10%(system) =641W.

 

In theory a Power Supply is capable of pushing out about 10% over it's maximum capability.  But I'd recommend against it.
