Pc upgrade ?

Rodark

Hi there! Todays new game trailers got me thinking. Is it time for an upgrade?

Location: Europe

Case: Deepcool Matrexx 55 Mesh add-rgb 4f
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 Esports Duo Red
RAM: RipjawsV 16GB DDR4-3200MHz 16 CAS
Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC
GPU: MSI 2070 Super Gaming x Trio
PSU: Corsair TX650M
Storage: Kingston A2000 1TB nvme, WD Blue 4TB 5400rpm, WD Blue 320gb 5400rpm, WB Blue 1TB 5400rpm, WB Blue 6TB 5400rpm
Monitor: AOC 24g2u/bk

Ill be honest, no budget yet, its just a thought. Starfield is definitely gonna be a heavy game and the way the graphics are nowadays, almost everything is gonna look good going forwards, thats why im not sure my system can survive 2023-2024 and beyond

The target is of course gaming, 1080p/60 fps minimum at high settings minimum

So far, although i havent played the heaviest titles like Cyberpunk, i havent encountered any issues, besides some fans ramping every now and then.

But my gpu is 2 gen old by now and my cpu even more.

What do i MUST upgrade ?

Do i keep anything besides peripherals/storage ?

Even though i dont have a budget lets go with a small upgrade (wont be getting a 4090 any time soon for example)

Any suggestions so i can plan ahead ?

I know i definitely want a new case, this one doesnt have space for my hdds and has some problems in general

I would start with keeping your ram too and then upgrading your cpu to a 5800X3D after a bios update. Either that or you can upgrade to am5

And then for gpu the 6800 xt is a good deal. Or the higher end models. But what would be your idea of a budget for a bit of a ballpark?

thanks for the quick reply. hmm i think it should be around 1000-1500 max if i reaaaally stretch it. so lets assume 1200 euros to be sure

Doing amazon is good, although i must search on European amazons, since if i order from us, like newegg, i ll probably pay import fees!

But its good to know the items i need, so i can research the prices!

Like i thought, seems the cpu is my biggest problem.

May i ask why amg gpu ? is nvidia bad at mid range now ?

I also notice, you didnt upgrade my psu. you think its gonna be ok with cpu+gpu upgrade ?

Oh also i forgot to mention, i got 6+1 im not using deepcool fans on my case, which should easily carry over to the new case

todays game trailers make u think its time for a upgrade? you should only upgrade if ur current pc is giving you enough performance not on the fact that future games may not run well on it

-If you can hold off a bit longer on the CPU, there are increasing rumors of AMD releasing a 5600X3D. I'd say that would fit your user profile a bit better. 5800X3D is around 300 euros, 5600X is around 160 euro's. Expect a 5600X3D to sit around 250 euros.

-I'd say replace at least a couple of those WD HDDs with 2TB nvme drive, sits around 120 euros.

-Finally the GPU: That is a tough one. Current gen is mostly either too pricy for the given budget, or too trash not worth considering. Remember that any decent upgrade will put you in replace PSU territory too. I would actually highly advice that since your PSU is I think 6 years old and will be quite stressed because the power draw can get close to the limit of that PSU. In fact, I'd swallow that cost first. Your aim would be for an 850W A-tier PSU ( https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/ ). I checked and I think the cheapest is around 140 euros (Cooler Master V850 Gold-V2). You could try to get a B-tier PSU which is definitely a bit cheaper, I am not sure how much of a risk that is.

Then, aim for a second hand GPU card. 6900XTs gp for around 600-700 euro's on ebay.

oh i can definitely wait, as i said im just planning ahead, so i can know what to get and how much ill need to be worth it.

yeah at some point ill replace the hdds, but thats a second though. just checked the 6800 xt nvidia equivalent is the 3080 which is 840 :S so i guess amd is the way, at least for my budget

would a better plan be to go for a 3090-4060-4070 for example + psu and upgrade the cpu down the road ?

EDIT: ill also check locally, i found a MSI GeForce® RTX 4070 12GB Gaming X Trio for 800

I'd advice against buying a 4070. It is not that good of a gpu for the money.

Again, try to buy a last gen second hand. You can find 3070ti's for instance for around 400 euro's (just dont buy gigabyte ones since they apparently are more prone to cracking), which is only around 20% slower than the 4070. Given current gen is at best only marginally better up to the 4070, and beyond that quite a bit better but also way more expensive, I think buying previous gen second hand is the best way forward.

Add another set of that RAM for a total of 32GB and this cpu in the link after you update your boards bios.

Upgrade to at least 5700X and RTX 4060Ti or 4070. May have to get new PSU, but it should still work.

better future-proofing.

no such thing, pay for what you need now, nothing more. The 5800X3D would be a better choice for gaming

GPU: Since you mentioned that your current GPU is a few generations old, upgrading to a more powerful graphics card would definitely enhance your gaming experience. The RTX 3070 or RTX 3080 would be solid choices, providing better performance and support for ray tracing technologies.

AMD is actually killing it in the gpu space now so I would recommend a 6800 xt/6950 xt with 16 gigs of vram

3 minutes ago, Chambali said:

Case: You mentioned that you want a new case, and that's a good idea if your current one is causing problems. Look for a case that offers good airflow and has enough space for your HDDs. Some popular options include the NZXT H710, Fractal Design Meshify C, or Cooler Master MasterCase H500.

The lancool 216 is pretty good as well, meshify c is a bit overpriced

and RTX 4060Ti or 4070

both are overpriced. a 3060 ti for 100 bucks less than a 4060 ti can be better in some situations. and the 4070 is essentially a 3080 which can be beat by a 6950 xt

Don't forget he lives in Europe, meaning unfortunately pricing can differ quite a bit.

That same unit for instance will cost in Belgium/Netherlands around 145 euros, while it is a B-tier spec. There are slightly cheaper options that are A-tier. Like this one: https://www.megekko.nl/product/4186/1119298/PC-Voedingen-PSU-/Cooler-Master-V850-Gold-V2-White-Edition-PSU-PC-voeding

It would, but I think a 5600X3D would be even better for his case. It is unlikely he will be using those 2 extra cores while getting the same benefit of that V-cache at a cheaper price. That is if the rumors are true of course.
