For MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX Motherboard Users [Ram Upgrade]

Hi,
This post is especially for MSI M450 Tomahawk Max users.
Suppose you have 16GB Ram in your system right now and If you want to upgrade it to 32/64GB.
Although this motherboard has 4 ram slots but the CPU memory controller (Corrected) on this is extremely poor, i have been using this motherboard for almost 2 years and this is what i came up with after a lot of testing and stressing.
I have 4x 8GB Corsair Vengeance lpx 3600Mhz cl18 sticks.
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600.

Below are the confirmed, tested and stable configuration. (1 or 2 sticks of rams) - XMP Profile ON

1x 8GB Corsair Vengeance lpx 3600Mhz works on 3600Mhz Speed - Slot 2 ✅
2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance lpx 3600Mhz works on 3600Mhz Speed (dual channel) - Slot 2, 4 ✅

Below are the confirmed, tested and stable configuration. (4 sticks of rams) - XMP Profile OFF

If you put 4 sticks it wont work by default, here is the work around.

➡️ Put 1 RAM stick

➡️ Turn OFF XMP Profile

➡️ Go to Overclocking and in memory speed put 3000 or 31xx, leave the rest as default
➡️ Save, Boot up then Turn off.

➡️ Put all 4 RAM stick, Boot up.

4x 8GB Corsair Vengeance lpx 3600Mhz works on 2133Mhz Speed ✅
4x 8GB Corsair Vengeance lpx 3600Mhz works on 3000Mhz Speed ✅
4x 8GB Corsair Vengeance lpx 3600Mhz does not works on 3200Mhz Speed ❌ (use to work before but now it does not)

4x 8GB Corsair Vengeance lpx 3600Mhz does not works on 3600Mhz Speed ❌

Ideal Condition:

✅ Use single 16GB stick

✅ Use 2x 16gb stick for total 32gb ram

✅ Use 2x 32gb stick for total 64gb ram

Bios version:
7C02v39

Don't want to go higher than that because when selling this can not be sold to any ryzen 5 3xx series. after that bios update.

Thank you for reading this.
I hope this post help user deciding what to purchase when you want to upgrade or purchase new rams for this motherboard.

Have a great day.

This is not the case.

First and foremost, the memory controller is on the CPU. Not on the motherboard.

And we don't know which exact RAM you used. And which bios version.

I have that board in my second system, it also worked in my main, and it had no issues running two Kingston HyperX ddr4 3200 cl18 paired with Kingston HyperX 3200 cl16. One RAM was Hynix CJR the other Hynix JJR.

Corsair does not make RAM. Please use something like PassMark RamMon or Thaiphoon Burner to identify the RAM.

The Bios you have is an ancient one. No wonder your RAM has issues. 7 newer versions were released.

You're still on Agesa 1.1.0.0., that's one generation and 8 subgenerations old.

Flash the latest Bios. Then retry XMP.

I'm talking about the company that sells those rams, an average customer does not know what the end company is, he only sees Intel, AMD, Cooler Master, Nvidia, AMD or Corsair.

I wonder what makes you feel that i'm not cooperating? Thats rude.

I told you RAM isn't made by Corsair. Corsair RAM with the same "name and model" can have different RAM inside and that effects everything.

After I told you that and how to check, you continued with the "Corsair RAM". In a thread where you're blaming a perfectly good motherboard for some memory incompatibility issues you're having with your system that uses an ancient bios and god knows what RAM...

Well, here is an update.
7C02v3F Bios version.

3600Mhz 4x8 Sticks of Rams does not work right out of the box in Tomahawk Max Msi B450 Motherboard.

Had to run them at 3200Mhz although it is not stable too. Many times i get BSOD and ram goes to 2133 Mhz

XMP off
Overlocking off.
Game Boost Off.

I have a secondary system with a Ryzen 3600 and a Tomahawk B450 Max. I had it running 4 8GB sticks. At 3200. Without issues. Kingston RAM from two different series (and manufacturers).

You still didn't answer which RAM. And there's a trick if you have different RAM - the worse RAM should be in the primary slots so that the XMP of the worse RAM gets loaded.

And also the same RAM should be in the paired slots.

Edit: do not load the frequency manually (without XMP), that way you'd keep the timings and voltage of the JEDEC frequency (2133 in your case) and those timings are too strict for anything above 2400 or 2666.

If your RAM is seated properly in the appropriate slots and your XMP 3600 isn't stable, you have to load XMP 3200 (second profile) or keep the XMP 3600 and lower the frequency manually to 3200.

Hi There,

You claim to have 3600 Cl18 sticks but your link says 3200 Cl16.

I have the same motherboard with a Rx3600 and 4 CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 sticks with Samsung memory on it (via CPUZ you can see wich factory memory is on it) In my case it all runs perfect, I am now waiting for a Rx5900X and as that uses the same memory controller I hope that will run fine as well.

my bios version is 7C02v3H

Update after upgrading to a Ryzen 9 5900x

I have 32 Gb ram the CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 (2sets),

everything runs stable with XMP1 on 3200,

I did however find out that the PBO setting has to be set to either enabled or disabled or even one of the eco settings.

But if you choose the auto setting it will not run stable.

My aircooler is a Noctua NhU12A and under full load the cpu runs 71,2°C at max. (during a cinebench R23 test, score was 21047)

with PBO switched off it had a max temp of 69.6°C according to OCCT.

just my two cents 😉

I had a really bad time running 4 stick with this motherboard.
Trust me on every boot i had to deal with black screen no post.

So i had to randomly put single stick to make it to the bios and then i was only able to run 2 sticks (16GB total)
so i had to sell my other 2x8 GB stick because it was no use of me.
I wonder what is the issue, anyways.
Having dual channel is a perfect combination and most stable to run rams on.
I will upgrade to 16x2=32GB in future instead of running 4 STICKS NIGHTMARE.
peace!
