Linus Tech Tips, Tech Quickie, Tech Linked channels hacked

betav17
Message added by Spotty,

The Linus Tech Tips, TechLinked, and TechQuickie Youtube channels have been restored.

A video explaining what happened is now up:

Someone created a fake 'new' channel and pretends to be communicating on the issue to gain followers quickly. Please report them as "impersonating another user" and just put "https://www.youtube.com/c/LMGClips" as the channel they're impersonating LTT since the LTT channel is down and it won't recognize it.

This is the fake channel:

https://www.youtube.com/@LinusTechTips2.0

That is a good troll. Let him live 馃槃
Seriously, would you blame someone that put up legitimate video "10 hours of LTT Sponsor Segments to fall asleep to"? I wouldn't, I will snooze to this one tonight and you better believe it 馃槆

Either there has been a horrible maritime plane crash (Please don't tell me there has been a horrible maritime plane crash), or Floatplane is having a good day.

That's the thing - you don't.

Anyway, now I wonder which Russian group is behind this... or somebody from a certain English forum, as nobody else really does cryptostreaming.

At least this hack made me curious enough to discover this forum! I hope you will not only recover your channels soon, but also find what the attack vector was.

If it makes YouTube add some more security features, it will still be a big W.

Thanks for the concern everyone. We are still in recovery mode over here and working with YouTube to get everything restored. Will hopefully have a video (or at least an update on WAN Show) to share with you all ASAP, but we want to make sure we get the details right since smaller channels may rely on our experience to help harden their own security.

Stay strong.

Surely it must be an inside job? Surely the channel has 2FA for login?

2FA isnt infallable, it just makes it more difficult. If someone logs in on a network such as a masquerading wifi, and does their 2FA, then a MITM can be done to capture the session cookie data post-auth and boom.聽

Theres plenty of ways to get around 2FA. But yeah, either they have got access to someones device with privileges on the channels, or someone has fallen into being connected to one of these networks. This is also why its bad to have WiFi in businesses that can reach outside which are on the main VLAN...because WPA2 is still susceptible to wifi phishing.聽

This sounds like you're complaining about free content?

I highly doubt that they reupload backups as it loses all their metrics.聽

My understanding on YouTube is that videos arent actually deleted straight away. They're just marked as deleted and removed, much like a recycle bin. So YouTube can restore the content. Regardless, YouTube would also have their own backups which would include database and everything about your account.聽

I was just going to continue watching last WAN Show, but checked my notifications first only to see that LinusTechTipsTemp channel with that crypto BS and Musk in the thumbnail. I knew immediately that *stuff* hit the fan... hope it will be back up soon, had to watch RTFM instead XD
