How much "AWESOME" factor will the Oculus Rift add to Star Citizen? Will it be "must have"?

I can't see it being must have in first person combat mode but flying around in your spacecraft might make it really advantageous.

Thoughts?

The first dev kit was pretty awful.

The effect it has is pretty cool, but the resolution is far too low.

I would wait until its finished before buying one, especially for playing games instead of developing software.

Wait for the consumer release but it will make gaming, especially simulations, car plane space (StarCitizen), feel much more realistic.

I tried DK1 and the resolution is way to low but the experience is amazing, and the head traking is better on DK2 and hopefully even better on the consumer version

Well not just oculus. VR headsets in general. By that not only LCDs strapped to your head also.

Well, although I much rather prefer atmosferic flight ( lets hope SC does have it, a good one ! ), i guess for any serious gamer, oculus is a must :D I mean, its much more comfortable than looking at the monitor allready ( not much strain on eyes, and its only to get better).

Last week I got the chance to use both the Rift DK2 and the morpheus. The DK2 is definately the better of the two, however the rift does have a year of development on the sony product.

to the dk2. the screen was excelent. no smearing, no pixlation that I noticed, and it was comfortable. the only concern I have is that the camera is rather sensative and rather easy to break.

I really really want an oculus or some type of VR however like others have said wait for the consumer release as I am doing, The resolutions will be better as well as the support in other things by that time so a win win.

The Development kits are just that Development kits, they are meant for developers to test things, break things, hopefully fix things. not for general consumer usage.

As for Oculus and Star Citizen well I don't think it will be absolutely required. think on it this way, ever played flight sim or similar? Did you have a VR headset? No... well it will be similar in view to that. Bring on the thumbstick on your joystick or controller for head movement.

I got to try out a version 1.5 of the rift last weekend. It was awesome! I didn't feel sick or anything and after 5 minutes I forgot I was even using it. I will be getting the final consumer version when it comes out. (Though I'm still a little iffy on what the whole facebook thing means, as long as there isn't any hard coded phoning home to facebook with the hardware, I will be getting it).

I think VR will be one of the next step in all games, not just Star Citizen. I am excited for the consumer version of the Oculus. Already have dollars squirreled away for it.

Never say it's not broken. Everything is broken. Why? Because everything needs MOAR POWA!

Only thing that worries me about VR headsets is position of my keyboard, since I will mainly use HOTAS but as I figured out some of the biding would be useful to have on keyboard, miss clicking is very annoying, and since you can't see it could be a problem.

I think it will mostly depend on the complexity of the game controls. For sure the game's gonna look a ton better with the helmet on. Just for the fun of flying around I've ordered a dk2, but I also think that for those intense battles where you have tons of controls to take care of it's going to be tough to play in the Rift. HOTAS will help a lot, but even then it might be difficult to map every important ship function to buttons. Maybe for those intense moments track IR would be a better option? It gives you a great awareness but doesn't limit your keyboard vision.

It will be amazing to be able to look around the cockpit while flying through space, around space stations and other ships, etc. I'm waiting for the consumer version though.

Also I'm not sure how well VR will work in the first person mode for walking around or FPS and whatnot. Maybe it will be fine I just have no idea how that will work with an aiming cross hairs usually bound to the mouse... idk

Tried DK 1 for a little bit because a friend had it. I thought it was freakin amazing! Did a little roller coaster sim and I could feel my stomach lurch when the coaster dropped  :D . Very excited for the consumer version.

Rest in peace, legend.

So my DK2 just arrived. It's quite amazing, yet still it lacks resolution.

Did anyone manage to run the arena commander on a DK2? I can't get it to work so any help would be super appreciated.

Didn't Oculus state that the new OR uses updated software? That might be your problem, maybe RSI hasn't updated for it yet.

And so GabeN has told us to march forthith unto the Land of Holy welding our swords of mice, shields of keyboards, and helmets of Oculus Rifts where we shall reclaim it-which is rightfully ours-from the PUNY Console Peasants from whom armed only with mere controllers we shall decimate in all forms of battle and we shall dominate even in their most ridiculous tradition and infatuation of CoD. Yes, my brothers- sisters and trans sexuals too- we shall destroy the inferior of races with our might and majesty. Check the RSI forums. I know guys over there with the DK2 were not able to get it working either. Donno if there's been an update for it yet.

I think that VR will be a great thing to bring our experience to the next level. Not absolutely necessary, but a highly welcomed addition. I'm ready for the consumer Rift to drop.

Thanks,

I went through the forums yesterday and didn't find anything. Maybe rift support will be updated with the incoming patches.

AFAIK if it isn't working with legacy (DK1) support enabled it probably wont work till they patch to the 0.4.X SDK, I have heard that even with legacy support some games don't work properly though. Mine should be turning up this week (YAY!) but I think the next major SC patch is still 1 1/2 to 2 weeks away :( They might do a small one before then but I wouldn't count on it.

You'll have to stick to Half-Life 2 and Quake 1/2 for now ;)

Ok, so after about 2 weeks of playing with the DK2 the only thing that I can say is that it's a total game changer. I thought it would be like watching a 3d movie but it's so much more. I couldn't try SC as it doesn't work with dk2 but elite dangerous is something that blew my head. The sense of being in space is difficult to describe. The feeling of scale and depth is mind blowing. Same goes for DCS World. Sitting in a cockpit felt like sitting in a cockpit.

So my answer to the subject is: Yes, it's a must have.

It is quite demanding. Before going rift I was plying ED at 2560x1080 with max setting no sweat. With rift I'm currently at 1920x1080 with the lowest graphical settings. I had to degrade so much to get to 75 fps. Otherwise the camera gets a little choppy and after 30 minutes of playing I feel sick. Another thing is that with a rift graphics settings are becoming less important. The great experience comes from being "in" the game and those little volumetric effects and stuff are less important. With the consumer rift being even higher resolution I'm afraid that crazy computer rigs will have to get built to run SC with it. At this point I'm sure I'll do anything to have it running on an oculus.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago and its very cool, I will say first person shooting for the most part isn't very good because of simulator sickness IMO and swinging your head all around the place all the time does get tedious too (especially in games with a lot of verticality). Its alright for short periods but longer runs always get to me and the less realistic the graphics the better, stuff like Quake 1 I found a lot more manageable then Half-life 2 and Tuscany presumably because subconsciously I was slightly more removed from the experience. I can definitely understand why they are targeting seated experiences now.

Cockpit and third person stuff is great though and where I see a lot of the focus going once dev's figure that out, it makes a lot more sense to my brain and more of the action is generally focused your forward arc. Vanguard V and Titans of Space were mind blowing but personally I don't think it'll be truly worth while until they get a minimum of a 4K screen in there, it does show a lot of promise even at 1080p though.

TLDR; Not yet ;)
