How much longer does my RTX 2080 Ti have?

GoForLifeJr

Hello,

So I built my PC in early 2019, with a 9900K and an RTX 2080 Ti. I have added various upgrades over the years such as more storage and adding 32GB to the existing 16GB of RAM. I have a 1440p/144Hz monitor.

I plan to keep this PC through college.

How much longer would this thing be able to play at this resolution at high to ultra for all games?

Thanks,

Depends how married you are to the 144Hz.  It will perform twice as well if you run it at half the speed.  My personal opinion is that anything over 60hz has diminishing returns.  Your eyes truly aren't fast enough to tell the difference between 120/ 144/ and 240.  It is all about your gaming usage.  I am still using a 1070.

It must be true, I read it on the internet...

it will explode in 3 weeks, 2 days, and 5 hours.

i'm still on a GTX970. as it turns out, GPU's dont get slower, demands increase. so how long your GPU will last depends entirely on which games you'll want to be playing down the road, and what compromises in settings you'd be willing to make.

Dang, my money was on 3 weeks, 2 days, 6 hours, 23 minutes and 7 seconds.

But yeah OP, your card will last either till it fails (this is entirely luck of the draw, I've got abused cards that have lasted over 10 years and I've got pampered cards that have lasted until just outside the warranty period) of until it stops giving you satisfactory performance, and everyone on here has a different definition of that.

If you upgrade the CPU regularly, for 1440p it will probably be fine the next few years.

The CPU, on the other hand, is a bit outdated and it's going to show it's age pretty soon.

If you not use RT than is fine for next 3-4 years even more. I have 2080 and it still can run High-Ultra  setings without any problem at least at 60 FPS 1440p in new games with DLSS or FSR on. As long as you not use RT or want play at 4K you will be fine with this GPU for long time. VRAM is not problem even in upcoming games as long as you not use 4k or this ultra wide resolutions.

Your card has nothing to do with it: your own personal preferences do. Up until mid 2022 I was rocking an R9 290, a card which came out in late 2013 (and which I bought more or less when the 970 came out, a year later). That's over 8 years on a single GPU.

It's not like it was broken either: it's just that some newer AAA games I wanted to play wouldn't run in full HD at ~60fps beyond low settings. It could certainly have run for longer if I had wanted it to.

Your GPU is about 4 years old at this point, and trades punches with the RTX 3070, which is still a very capable (and current) GPU. I suspect it'll stay competitive with mainstream cards for another generation or two, so you might easily get another 4 years out of the card if it doesn't fail. You might just need to revise your expectations if you expect 1440p/144Hz gameplay.

Personally, I wouldn't upgrade until absolutely needed. That is, when you're no longer able to maintain the settings you desire on a game that justifies an upgrade.
