Using midrange or highend hardware on 1080p and wondering why it underperforms? Here's the thread for you.

If you have a Zen 4 or Intel 12th/13th gen CPU paired withan RTX 4090 or 3090 or 3080 ti or 4080 or 4070ti.

If you have a Zen 3 or Intel  10th/11th gen CPU paired with a Radeon 6700XT, 6800, 6900 or 7900 series.

Or any other combination of the two...

And you're playing on 1080p YOU ARE SEVERELY BOTTLENECKING YOUR GPU.

So much that your experience gets ruined. And it should be. Get your priorities straight.

No setting will help you, asking random questions about it won't help, expecting miracles from Windows /drivers won't help.

Pair your hardware acordingly. 1080p is a low resolution. GPU-s can do so much more the CPu-s can't keep up.

Your GPU will work in a lower power state (cause there's no load!) and you'll have terrible performance because of that.

At least 10 people open a thread about this daily here. Don't. It makes no sense.

I saw that thread which you are referencing from just awhile ago and yeah...time to upgrade if you're running at RTX 4090. Stop playing on your sub $300 high refresh rate 1080 panel after spending $1,600+ for a graphics card and go at least 1440 or 4K.

Can confirm, my Ryzen 5 3600 bottlenecked the hell out of my RTX 3080, ended up with only a few frames over my old 2080 Super.

Upgraded to a 7800x and my frametimes improved significantly and FPS went up about 5-7%.

Most of my time on this forum I am replying to threads like those, and the number of such threads grows I'd say exponentially. Not searching for similar posts/threads, not looking at all, just trashing people who can't afford high end by INTENTINALLY bottlenecking your system and then bragging about it.

 

Look, my newest 7900X3D with my 128GB of 6000MT/s DDR5 and my 4090Ti, I have stutters on my brand new 1366x768 Asus monitor, please help, is it my 1600W PSU, is it too weak? Or is it my Gen 4 7300 MB/s SSD, should I get Gen5?

Or you could just you know disable GPU power saving features and get the full grunt of the GPU for more FPS.

It's not as clear cut as the OP is saying, 3070 used to be a defacto 1440P GPU at high refresh, now that is the 3080Ti - 6900 tier.

1080P high-refresh is where a 3070 is now best or 1440P 60.

 

Games release over time demanding more, so also get clued up on how performance changes over time for your GPU with different games.

If you can't handle this, there is always a console.

Yeah it's as if they haven't thought out their build well or were advised poorly on which parts to choose. You are right though in your OP that CPUs are struggling to feed an RTX 4090, one of the fastest graphics cards on the market, and are receiving poor results as a result and playing lower resolutions, where loads typically shift towards the CPU more than the GPU to keep the GPU fed.

When you think about it, it actually is that clear cut. It's just that 4K is tne new 1440p, 1440p is the new 1080 and 1080 is what 1024x768 was. Before that it was 1600x1200, 1024x768 and 800x600. Games were always becoming heavier to run, hardware was always improving, if you had a card youd use for years you started with a higher resolution/details and over time you had to lower.

People now expect to use the lowest resolution with the highest hardware.

I beg to differ. The 4090 will never become a low end card. It will become a used low end card. A new low end card will cost more than it and perform the same. On the low resolution of 1440p or 4K in 2030s games.

 

Playing on 1080p has it's limitations in what you can (fully) use.

Uhm the 8800 GTX cannot run modern games even if they were DX9 or 10 at the resolution it was intended for by the market and recommenders of it's era even at low setings above 30FPS.

 

Barely does lowest settings in much older games. None at 1600x900 and handles very light games just about.

I am saying that I don't care what people do with their money, not my responsibility, however I would advise people to go in with a plan and a realistic expectation, sadly many think you need the biggest amount of FPS possible and don't understand the concept of capping FPS to reduce stutter.

 

I am very sure anyone with a 4090 and say a 13th gen intel CPU even at 1080P is getting sick framerates, so the obsession with FPS is just that an obsession, and this is a problem with the PC gaming community in general, obsession with graphics, dick waving competitions with what hardware each other owns, discarding other options because you now think you are "better than" because you spent more money to play games and mock others.

Indeed, I have a 165hz monitor yet play Hogwarts Legacy at 60 FPS on it as I prefer no FPS drops, even though I can do 90 FPS average.

It's not a title that needs the high framerate. But it's an poorly optimized RAM hog.

I guess if you were playing an online shooter, doesn't even need to be a twitch shooter, you'd aim for a 120+ lock...

And you wouldn't try to do it on 720p ... cause you understand "the new futureproofing" XD

Shooters though tend to be optimized funnily enough.

I don't really play online FPS anymore, in my 30's, stopped caring about useless competition, all online video games are now just intense sweat fests for people with nothing else in life, so yes sadly the biggest proportion are children or 20 somethings who have yet to find a direction in life.

 

Gaming sadly unless you are making money from it should only be a hobby, not your life.

And whilst I do enjoy high-refresh rate I have grown to not really care anymore.

Yea I wish my cpu could keep up. Hate going with 1440p. But cheaper to get a monitor than upgrade the rig.
