GPU Upgrade Used Market Discussion

jimmy6300

Hello everyone,

I have my tax refund on its way and while I am planning to buy a house this year, I am also wanting to upgrade the GPU in my system.

I primarily game at 1440p 60HZ and I do have a mixed reality headset that I play games such as Blade & Sorcery on. I usually play triple A games such as RDR2, BF2042 and other demanding titles.

My question is what would you guys recommend as a good upgrade from a 1070? Trying to stay under $450 and I will be primarily looking at the used market such as eBay.

The cards I am mainly considering are the RTX 3060Ti, RTX 3070, Radeon RX 6700XT or the Radeon RX 6800, those cards are all within $100 of each other on eBay.

I don't care about RTX or DLSS, I already use AMD FSR in RDR2 just to get a stable 60FPS at 1440p. I just want better performance across the board in both normal games and VR, and I do like to occasionally record gameplay.

Let me know your guys thoughts and experiences, I am willing to go for AMD if it gets me better performance for my dollar, but I am hesitant as I have not used an AMD GPU since the R9-270X I had in 2014 lol. I have heard a lot of both good and bad about their GPUs, so I would like to hear experiences from you guys.

Below are my system specs currently:

Case: Fractal Design Focus G

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X (Stock Wraith Prisim cooler)

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X

RAM: 2x8GB G.skill 2400MHZ

PSU: Rosewill ARC-750 750 watt 80+ Bronze

Monitor: AOC 27 inch 2560x1440 60hz

Thanks!

I'm in a very similar situation myself, currently looking for either an RX 6800 or XT for less than $450 total to upgrade from a Vega 56 for my 1440p 170Hz monitor.

I would personally not consider the 6700 XT, the core config is way nerfed in comparison, especially considering the price gap.

I previously bought a used EVGA 3060 Ti for a friend and it has worked very well, but they only have a 1080p 144Hz panel.

Keep an eye out on eBay, you can get a 3080 from time to time at those prices.

If you want pure performance and no RTX or CUDA cores, you can also find 6900 xts at that price range with some patience.

The 6900 xt is a little harder to get at that price range, but I think it's doable. If it's not, I'd go for a 3080.

Edit:

That 3080 above sold for $450 in the end.

3080 sold for $450 and the link now defaults to a different listing.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

A new 6700XT is where I would go.  Used?  Id look at used 3070's and 6800's then.
