Used GPU with...odd residue in heatsink

A heatsink can be washed. I'd wash that. Would try the ultrasonic bath first, if it doesn't help...

So I managed to score a Yeston RX 6800XT on Ebay for fairly cheap, but as soon as it arrived I realised that the heatsink was dirty with something *other* than dust (which is what it looked like in the pictures of the listing)

It's in fact, not dust, but more of a crystalized, dried-up sort of residue that is very brittle and the excess mostly crumbles away fairly easy. 

The card works perfectly fine, I even opened it all, cleaned it and replaced the paste/pads, and the performance is top notch, no heat issues nothing. But whatever this residue is, it will not come off the heatsink.

I doused it in isopropyl alcohol, scrubbed it repeatedly with a rough toothbrush, and its still mostly there. My only guess is that this card was used for mining, or was in a open case in a warehouse and this is some kind of corrosion.

Should I be worried? It works great, and I have no issues with it. But I guess it's to no surprise that I haven't heard from the original seller since then 😛

maybe someone who vaped a lot near it? causing corrosion mixed with whatever stuff they were vaping? otherwise, i have no good guesses lol. is there corrosion(or whatever that is) elsewhere like in the dp/hdmi ports?

Did you check the return label on where it was shipped from? If it's a coastal town that's possibly salt spray. Vape deposition seems pretty outlandish but I guess is possible. 

Regardless, unless it was a *screaming* deal (200$) I'd refund it. 
If you do keep it, I'd likely just chill with it as is, performance is performance, but if you *really* want it gone, dental picks are cheap AF and should do the trick

It's either vape residue or buddy lived near the ocean and humidity was an issue.

Yeap looks like a mining card, had plenty with similar appearance, and as you said it will have been in a garage or shed etc.  If it was a good deal then no issues, have had plenty of ex mining cards, some still going strong 3-4 years later

A heatsink can be washed. I'd wash that. Would try the ultrasonic bath first, if it doesn't help...

I'd be concerned for the condition of the card below the corroded aluminum heat sink. Whatever was hitting the fins was also probably hitting the PCB under there, might find corroded components or solder joints. Bare copper would surely be affected.

If it was salt it'd have come off with the alcohol, like most of the white tint and the residue is still there

Also the seller isnt responding to me so i dont know how to ask for a refund xD

humid room maybe, and definitely not damaged or at least the board itself wasnt. Maybe just the heatsink. Smoker i dont think cuz the residue would have come off or at least most of it. This is just not coming off

Does vape cause something like this? Kinda surprised it would get to this state from just vaping.

Everything else is like perfectly fine, no corrosion. There were a few screws inside that had a bit of rust to them (which makes me think humidity is involved) but that's about it. Everything else is really good state.

Well it was from Sydney Australia so I have reason to believe it could be coastal. 

It wasnt quite 200 but it was 500 and I also have been ghosted by the seller. Might have to contact Ebay about this but because this took so long to get to me I dont know if it's still available for refund. 

Otherwise it's a great card, works like a charm. From a 3060ti this was quite the upgrade, and after i repalced the pads and paste from inside it, the thermals from everything never go beyond 80 so I think I might just keep it and try to clean it in some way shape or form.

I tried toothpicks as well, that got rid of most of the built up residue out, but even after an alcohol bath the heatsink remains "stained" everywhere.

I have no issues with the card being used for mining anyway, just that before buying I did ask him if it was a mining card and he said no xD 

lesson learned, ebay sucks. But yeah cards great otherwise

Honestly might try that, sounds like it could work as most of the staining is almost rust-like or corrosion (stuck to the heatsink even if you scrub it).
