GPU as an upgrade for my GTX 980Ti

maartendc

Hello all,

I am looking to upgrade my aging GTX 980ti, but not in any particular hurry. I want at least 2x performance at 1440p to make it worth spending the money. I am thinking around now would be a good time to upgrade, as the newer cards are coming out and older cards are dropping in price.

I have owned both AMD and Nvidia GPU's over the years, and don't really have a specific preference either way. People say AMD has bad drivers, but I've never really had any issues.

- I was considering the RTX 3070 for a while, at around 600 EUR currently. Would love to see it drop further, but the price has been stagnant at 600 EUR for months now, and with Nvidia not launching a 4070 anytime soon, it will probably stay there. Only 8GB of VRAM is a major downside IMO.

- My eye now falls onto the RX 6800, which has kept falling in price, and is now around 575 EUR. This seems a compelling price to me. It is significantly faster than the RTX 3070, and it should be around 2.5x the speed of my 980Ti at 1440p. Don't really care about ray tracing. Double the VRAM of 3070 at 16GB.

- I could also get a used RTX 3070 or 2080Ti for around 400 EUR. Both should perform similarly. But for that money, I am not sure if I want to take a gamble on a used card, possibly used for mining, without warranty. For just a bit more I get a brand new card that performs better..

Which would you get? Is there any other reason I should consider another card?

Thanks!

NVIDIA had some really bad drivers in the last year and AMD had some too. It's not like one vendor is perfect and other sux.

Don't get 3070 for 600eur... that's an insanely high price. They go for around 500eur these days at most. Also you should perhaps consider RTX 3060ti as it's barely slower and usually cost significantly less.

Heck, RX 6700XT is also a great choice unless you absolutely want Ray Tracing otherwise it is around the same performance as RTX 3060ti/3070 for even cheaper.

If you're looking at spending 600eur then RX 6800 is the best bang for the buck as it almost matches RTX 3080 in many games and even beats it in some.

RX 6800 XT is a pretty good bang for buck now, performs faster or on par with 3080, I personally have it and I happen to play in 1440p.

All AAA games on highest settings, run at 100+fps.

So far as long as I stick to WHQL drivers, the drivers issue is not really a common occurrance.

To get 200% perf from a 980Ti you need a 6700XT, you can find one for $350

In my country these are 460 eur for the cheapest. Unless you are talking about used, which is not the route I want to go.

Is it a better deal at 460 than the RX 6800 at 575?

Both are ok deals, the 6800 is 25% faster and 30% more expensive, so your call/budget 🙂

Thanks for the good info.

Yeah it looks like the RX6700 XT is the best bang for the buck in my area right now at 460 EUR. The 3060Ti is 480 EUR but slower! The 3070 is way more expensive at 600, although a bit faster I think.

The RX6700XT is also just 15% slower than the RX6800, so I guess it is still better value.

Yeah the RX6800XT seems like a pretty good card, but that pushes me into 650+ territory, and that is more than I am willing to spend I think.

I see, well 6700 XT is a great choice as well.

See if you could find 6750 XT around the same price, it is a factory overclocked 6700 XT, but if it is about the same price, why not.

Some 6650 XT is around the samr price of 6600 XT, so might apply to 6750 XT as well.

Thanks buddy. Good info. Huh, I didn't even know the xx50XT cards existed. Thanks!

I figure it will be a while before AMD comes out with anything like a 7700XT, so its not a bad time to buy. Might wait until black friday time to see if any more drops occur.

Exactly. Actually up until this year, I felt no need to upgrade. Even at 1440p the 980Ti could handle anything I threw at it. But recently I encountered a few newer games where I have to turn down the settings to get to 60fps.

But seeing as prices are pretty high, I feel like I want at least 2x performance to make spending the money worth it.

My 980 worked really well for 1080p gaming, but when I got a 1440p 144hz display, it really fell short.

I went with a RX 6800XT, and haven't regretted it at all.

The ONLY problems I've had involve Windows being an absolute pile of ass and downgrading my drivers because MS can't figure out how software versions work. >_>

I bought a Quest 2 early this year and really enjoyed playing some sim racing, that's when I felt the urge to upgrade.
