1440p@240 OR 4k@120, which one would you choose and why?

Hi P
Go to solution Solved by Dukesilver27-,

Depends on the type of games I play.

If online competitive gaming such as MOBA or FPS/TPS shooters, 2k 240hz.

If single player or online slow paced games, or MMORPG games, 4K 120hz.

Because more fps gives better chance of better reaction time, to be clear, not increasing the skill of the player, just chance of being better.

Whereas single player or MMORPG games would be better played at higher resolutions for the sake of beautiful graphics being displayed, therefore giving better experience.

Let's say for the sake of it that your system easily support both options.

Would you rather game at 1440p 240 FPS or 4k at 120 FPS? And why?

2k @ 240 is where you want to aim. More frames is going to be more important for twitch react games like FPS, whereas 4k @ 120 will be better for immersive games, so it really depends on what you'll be playing.

Personally I went 4K 144 for my main rig, half because it was cheaper at time of purchase (I would've been just as happy at 1440P 240Hz as I am now), half because I play mostly sight seeing games where I'm unlikely to get up to 240Hz at either resolution, and it won't really matter much anyway. Plus the panel I picked up can do 1440P 240Hz with a monitor overclock, so it really is the best of both worlds.

I use my PC for more than just games so resolution and furthermore desktop real estate are first and foremost in my eyes. I play mostly slower paced single player games so my choice would be 4K, however personally I enjoy 21:9 so 3840x1600 is close enough.

It's an FI32U. I very well mightve gotten very lucky with it, but figured I might as well mention.

I'm assuming 2k means 1440p and given I play casually I vote for 4k120hz.

But there are a lot of scenarios as the question is kind of vague. Despite using ultrawide monitor myself I'll omit them as that would be another topic.

For 27-28 inch IPS: I'm currently not sold on 4k 27-28 inch display as I believe 1440p is the sweet spot. I would take more framerate than clearer resolution, so in this scenario I would get 1440p 240hz.

32 inch IPS: This is the moment I would flip to 4k 120+hz. 1440p is still fine as it has the same PPI as 24 inch 1080p display, so either way is fine depending on preference.

Beyond 32 inch: Definitely 4k 120+hz.

only reason i'd go 240fps is for competitive shooters, and i havent played that since battlefield 4. At the very least color gamut and pixel density goes down the drain compared to the 4k/120 offerings, and no oled options for 240hz

Everybody knows when people mentioned 2k, it means 1440p even though it is not so accurate.

Lately I've been playing the BioShock saga, which thanks to their lightness I'm stable at 165 FPS (my monitor cap refresh rate), the smoothness feels really good even for single player games, IMO

Naming sucks sometimes. I don't remember people calling them 2k but I guess it was after 4k became an actual name.

Also "HD" naming is starting to fall apart. HD, FHD, QHD, UHD... wait... 8k is also referred as UHD. Ugh...

It's best to just refer to the vertical resolution directly (eg. 1440p) rather than "2k" "2.5k" or "4k".  Same reason HD, FHD, QHD and UHD aren't as descriptive as using the resolution directly.

I'd personally go for 4K 120Hz every time. I don't really play shooters anymore and i never played moba. I'm mostly into singleplayer games nowadays and even when i rarely play counter strike, 120Hz is still fast enough to not hold me back at my skill level.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
