Don't buy AMD laptop if you still don't know how they name their mobile processor

(also posted in Reddit)

as titile, AMD will change the way they name their mobile processor entirely next year and you may have a chance to buy a laptop featuring a new CPU but with old architecture

here's the new naming scheme:

r/SuggestALaptop - Don't buy AMD laptop next year if you still don't know how they name their next-gen mobile processor

the first digit is no longer the generation but the year, which is kind of weird cuz it's really not that relevant to end users. The biggest issue is the third digit, which represents architecture:

2 = Zen 2

3 = Zen 3

4 = Zen 4

so let's say if the current 6600U will become 7630U (2023, Ryzen 5, Zen3+) next year and just take the one AMD had shown above as an example, 7640U on paper should be a processor that is just slightly better than 7630U but in reality it will be a processor with totally different architecture (7640U, 2023, Ryzen 5, Zen 4) and I personally think it will cause a huge confusion to the end users, especially the ones that are not quite familiar with PC hardware. It also implies that OEMs can do more marketing BS, such as claiming their laptop features the latest 7000 series processor but actually with old architecture like Zen 3 or even Zen 2 (who knows? maybe there will be something like 7320U, which looks new but with Zen 2 architecture)

In conclusion, DO NOT buy AMD laptop next year unless you'd fully understand how they name their mobile processor.

At least it seems to be consistent. I don't know why anyone would care about the "portfolio model year"...

Anyway, all I use the number for is to google the specs so it doesn't change much. It's not like past naming schemes gave you much information on what you were actually getting anyway.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

More of the same. A 5500U/5700U isn't the same gen as a 5600U/5800U already.

At least they finally made a legend that makes some sort of sense 😛
