New 4k monitor

Hey everyone,

I'm following the age old tradition of a novice tech person going to a trusted forum to ask about peripherals.  I would also like to preface my post by saying I did try to read the how to buy guide and it left me more confused than when I started it.  

So I'm running a 3060ti, I just got $390 for my birthday and I have enough money saved up to push my budget to $600.  I have more than that but I don't want to go too much higher than that.  I've been using an Asus monitor that's 1080p and 144hz but I feel like now is as good a time as any to treat myself to my first 4k monitor.  I would love to hear all of your recommendations on what monitors to go after.

Edit: I also want to add that I'm gonna keep the asus monitor as a second monitor using a dual monitor stand.  my stand only supports 27 inch monitors and up to 14 pounds

Do you play AAA games? Bc if you do, that 3060 ti won't be able to push frames fast enough. Might have to turn down a lot of settings.

I do, but most of the ones I play, I don't mind going down to like 60 frames to enjoy 4k.  The only game that I really care about frames for is COD and I turn the settings way down anyway to maximize frames

May not even be able to get 60 fps, at least without DLSS, you could only hope that DLSS is enough.

Any recommendations for 1440p?  Or should I just get a nicer 1080p monitor than the Asus I already have?

Yeah, there's quite a big price gap between a great 1440p and a better, big, OLED 4k one.

For 1440p I'd recommend MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD or LG 27GP850.  Both good IPS.

Ya as everyone mentioned, you should only go for 1440p as RTX 3060ti still way too low power for handling 4K gaming.

 

Just check out rtings or YouTube channel Hardware Unboxed for sourcing good 1440p monitor.

Contrary to what other people say, a 27" 4K monitor could make sense. Less demanding games or ones that don't need high framerates can be run at 4K. DLSS will also enable playable 4K framerates and the "quality" setting doesn't noticeably impact picture quality in my experience.

 

And if you still stumble across games where you need more fps, just use 1080p. A 4K monitor can display 1080p as good as a native 1080p monitor. If you want to go into details as to why that is, look up integer scaling.

 

So if you're still interested in 4K 144Hz, then have a look at the Gigabyte M28U. It's currently selling for $480, which is a steal.

I'd say skip 1440p if you can.  The pathway from 1440p (5k, 10k) isn't going to bear much fruit.  Shows/movies are pretty much dyed in the wool 4k and eventually 8k.  Some bastards even 21:9, but that's it.

 

2160p is the way to go.  You can scale to 1080p with minimal fuss (as Stahlmann noted), and that means you can decide if you like to run games native, or revert to 1080p  for more speed (in which case you lose nothing over what you have been using).

I have Asus strix Rtx 2080 super and bought

The Gigabyte M32U its a 32" 4k 144hz

Or you can get a smaller but same monitor

 the Gigabyte M28U its 28" 4k 144hz

I was on 4k 60hz with 1070ti before upgrading to 4k 144hz with 3080

 

Yes, in a lot of game, you might not get even 60 fps but I would argue that in a vast majority of single player AAA game, 40-50 fps is fine. So long as it allows you to run the game within the variable refresh rate range of the monitor (a good one can go as low as 20 fps.)

 

I always prefer higher refresh rate over higer resolution in AAA games but you may have your own preference. 4k for me is more about versatility, you have more content available to 4k than to 1440p (although that gap is shrinking)

 

But then again, if you want a good frame rate, don't forget that you still have NIS in addition to DLSS which should gurantee 60 fps frame rate in most game (with games like Cyberpunk being the obvious exception and also something like Forza Horizon which doesn't take overlay too well)

Totally agreed on this. As long not below 40fps, it is very playable and smooth. 

 

For 4K wise, they is no monitor I truly want yet. Maybe I wait for next year for better spec.

Playable-wise I would argue that even 30 is fine but it's certainly not all that pleasant compared to 40-60.

 

Cyberpunk is the only one game that are truly unplayale at 4k even at low on my old 1070ti. Tried it briefly before the upgrade and it's a literal slide show (and I seriously meant that, like probably 1-2 frames per second) 

 

In gaming context, 4k is all about the size imo. If you don't like big monitor then the benefit is marginal over 1440p (although it does look significantly sharper and I enjoy that a lot - but obviously a mininority here)

Rather than not optimised - I think the game simply offer you the 'next gen' graphic - as in you literally need the hardware from the future to run lol

 

Joke aside, if it's an optimisation issue, either dev or modders should be able to fix it by now. If nobody on the planet earth can make it run well, then that's the hardware not the tuning issue.

To me it is not well optimize as the not smooth part sometimes is smooth, sometimes is not until I turn off something or reduce it. This often happen to new tech on RTX. Anyway this games is also one of the reason I am eyeing RTX 4080 16 GB now.

4k may be fine with DLSS on a lot of non-AAA games.  The first 4k monitor I had was a 3.5(4)GB GTX 970.
