Learn a new language & Duolingo

I want to learn Latin. I would say I am pretty good with languages. At least English. I have been somewhat struggling with German at school but I really don’t like it so that’s why. I think learning English [mostly at school] is a lot different than learning it on your own. How do you suggest I go about doing this?

 

About duolingo, it had been fun but mostly it feels like a chore. This is not my intention and I even liked English homework..

May I ask, why Latin? It is a dead tongue with zero usability nowadays.

If you want to learn something related to Latin, you're better off learning Spanish, French, Italian or Romanian.

You don't need to speak latin to know single latin terms from medicine or law... in fact I'd say it's completely useless, scientific latin names rarely give a layman enough information to know what they indicate.

 

Learning Latin is useful if you're into literature, linguistics, history and other such subjects. You can't really study it the same way you would a normal language though - nobody speaks Latin, we don't even know for sure what it actually sounded like.

I have two friends who are about a year into learning Russian and Chinese and both have said Duolingo is grammatically wrong so often it shouldn't be used. They might have better Latin support but the Russian is not good

Personally, I'd say yes.

Maybe it would've been useful decades ago, but in this day and age, when the meaning to every word is at your disposal, searching for what a word means would be more valuable (imo) than having to learn a language that you'll realistically not use all that much, especially when you can find more info on said word (or combined words) while looking for the definition.

If someone wants to learn the language either way, then all power to them.

Can't speak on medicine or law specifically, but it's not something that I encounter enough in my field of study, and the ones that I did encounter did not require me to understand the language.

Aside from being forced to learn it, not really. You'll need to start building vocabulary, which will simply be grunt work. A flashcard program may be useful for that. Then you'll need grammar to make sense of sentence structure, which you'll have to obtain from grammar references. The same books school use can be a good start, as they are made for learning. Lastly, once you have learnt a bit of vocabulary and basic grammar you'll want to start looking into immersion: read whatever interests you (and is appropriate for your level) to put it to use and help solidify it. The first steps will be a lot of tedious things. Vocabulary is just a lot of work with a lot of repetition. There's no real way around that. And be prepared that learning a language is a long-term process that you should expect to take years of study in order to mature, give or take a few depending on how many hours a day you put in.

Well, as I said: learn vocabulary, learn grammar, start reading texts after some amount of studying using school books, for example, as your guide. It's a dead language, so there isn't a reference like after this amount of words and this grammar you are B1 in Latin. School books will help you start with easy stories and help prioritise grammar. Once you get going and have a basic understanding of the language you can start shaping what you study to your interests by picking texts that actually interest you. Language learning is most fun if it aligns with your interest. Words you don't know you add to your vocabulary study list and then you continue on.

 

I don't know what parts of duolingo come as a chore to you, but if it is the constant repetition of things then that is what language learning is at the end of the day. You need to repeat and use what you learn to reinforce it. 1) The most expensive way, you hire a private tutor hah.
2) More affordable, and perhaps more fun is to find a local Latin course that works with small groups of people in person. You meet new people, have peers, and perhaps make new friends (if you want to 🙂). Though this is the least flexible way of learning it regarding time, you will have to plan your free time.
3) Online courses, apps (like Duolingo), self-teaching (like tikker mentioned) are the cheapest option, beside cost another benefit is that you can easily pack them into your daily/weekly schedule... But this is IMO the least engaging way to learn something.

Yeah reading it back I misinterpreted it. There are plenty of textbooks around, but it's been years since I had Latin in school so I wouldn't know what to recommend.

Keep in mind that languages will be tricky and slow. It's easy to forget you spent your entire childhood (or life in general) absorbing and learning your native language. Granted, Latin will be harder since you are limited to historical and didactory material mostly. but the gist of language learning is the same.

Ignore the knuckle-dragging pundits.  Latin is quite useful for understanding etymology.  So is Greek--Greek is far, FAR more useful than "Spanish, French, Italian or Romanian".

 

Sure, you can google-fu every word you run across that you don't understand.  That wont' really impart a sense of how words have evolved over time from their roots.  Prefixes, suffixes and roots are also useful for learning to decipher nomenclature without help.

 

I mean, people could make the same argument about why math shouldn't be taught in schools--since you can just use a calculator or google the answers.  That's a stupid argument.

As someone who took 5 years of Latin, it's not for everyone. Latin is a lot more strict with its grammar rules, and has far less exceptions* than English. Am I fluent? definitely not. do I know enough to translate most sentences and some shorter passages? yes.

 

*Ablatives and there's a few words that conjugate with a different declension than their ending would show.

 

is it fun if you like that kind of thing? yea! I enjoyed it.
