How does an eight year old CPU fare in today's games ?

In a throwback to the good old days PCGamesHardware.de performed some very interesting benchmarks on what were considered the behemoth's of their day, AMD's Athlon 6400+ and Intel's Pentium 955 Extreme Edition CPUs.
In what can be considred a ridiculous setup both of these CPUs were paired with a GTX 780 Ti to see exactly how well would an eight year old top-end CPU perform with today's top end graphics.

So... How does an eight year old CPU fair in today's games ?

To answer that question PCGH ran a few gaming benchmarks and surprise surprise, the answer is.... terribly !

That's sure as hell not the glory days I remember...

Perhaps I'm too old but between 1999-2005 were the glory days for me.

I guess I did too few benchmarks back then... Either way my Pentiums never let me down. :D

Oh how I miss the glory days. AMD was leaving intel in the dust.

I remember those days, especially when the athlon 64s first came out.  AMD left Intel in the dust until they switched to the dual cores based on their Pentium-M chips.

i feel like amd is spread too thin between gpu and cpu, and that is why they are falling behind. It amazes me how amd is the only one standing between both NV and Intel from having a total monopoly.

@ Yep. I like to describe AMD as the bastards who stop Nvidia and Intel from making their products too expensive, and boy do we love them for it.

Inb4 someone mentions Titan Z.

The software started evenly distributing threads across multiple cores (...and threads) so while intel went to improve their terrible IPC (and dump netburst) amd focus'd on multicore cpus and hardware hyperthreading (modules)
now intel has really high IPC and amd has multiple threads.

everyone still rants about single core performance, what is this 2004? or are intel folks just really into badly threaded mmo's and rpgs?

been meaning to do a benchmark to see if intels hyperthreading could claw back the performance defecit with todays software, in some cases the bottleneck would be lessened but not gone completely and we can also see what games are really badly coded from this.

Obviously what happened was that these monsters were bottlenecked by the 780 TI. Put a decent graphics card in and you will unleash the beasts that are these CPU, and get around 1000 FPS in ultra BF4.

I miss the good old days, AMD used to kick ass, the Athlon XP 2600+ was an amazing chip, the phenom II x6 1090T gave the i7 950 a run for its money back in the day. Come on AMD bring back competition in the enthusiast market again.

intel is at least 3-4 years ahead AMD. they did not even have 22 nm CPUs :( and they have shity architecture. intel's i5 4670k 1 core is more powerfull then AMD's FX 8350 2 cores LOL

i doubt AMD will ever catch up intel

Computer users fall into two groups:
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.
