dual 290 or dual 770?

ElliotGS

I am going to be getting a asus vg248qe soon and am considering which graphics cards to get, i could either get another GTX 770 and SLI them, or get dual 290's in crossfire. I personally think the dual 290s as they will give me better performance and i can leave them litecoin mining while im away, but apparently there is still some problems with crossfire.

What do you guys think?

dual 290s would be superior and would give alot better performance, not to mention crossfire with 290s wont use a sli bridge

290s not because of mssing bridges but becase of superior performance, BUT pls take custom cooling especially for mining (downclocking is pretty bad with 290s)!

I believe the 290 in crossfire is better for gaming has it is faster than the 770. The 770 is at the same level of performance of the 280X.

That also depends on your budget and the price thats available at your region.

Personally i would go for the 290, because in my region is not overpriced yet.

770 = 280x, 290> 770 or > 280x, so dual 290.  and in my country, 290 only cost $50~70 more than the 770, so 290 for sure.

Dual 290s for the best performance. Dual 770s if you are willing to sacrifice performance for quieter and cooler running cards

gonna be going with the asus directcuii cards :D also gives me possibility to go 4k in the future. So there isnt any microstuttering or any other issues with crossfire that should be a problem?

In what case are you gonna put these ? And how much space is there between your pic-e slots?

Because while the 290's will have quite a bit better performance , they produce a lot of heat.

And with 2 open air coolers that could be a problem.

It's about 70W higher TDP than a 770. Which isn't insubstantial. However, given the downclocking people have had with the reference cooler getting hot, you're probably still better off with two open air coolers and a case with decent airflow over the reference design. Or water cooling them, is obviously the best solution. Heh. Solution. Water cooling... whatever.

ok it should be fine then. The new asus DC2 coolers are 2 slots right? because if there the 3 slot ones that's not ideal.

Yeah... I might add that one non ref R9 290 is easy to keep "cool", but add a second card and the top card might start to hover close to that 95 C under max system load :D

290s not reference, try getting either Asus, MSI or gigabyte or just buy 2 kraken G10s and cheap rads if you have no choice but to get reference.

DO NOT GET THE DIRECTCUII. It is very unoptimized for Hawaii, and two heat pipes aren't even used.

Just my two cents here, the direct cuii cards for the 290 and 290x are awful at cooling the cards because the basically copy and pasted the coolers from the 780 and 780ti which has a bigger die. Only one of the heat pipes make full contact with the 290 die. Try for another non-reference 290 please.

Look here and look at the thermal paste spot on the bottom of the cooler. ASUS did a poor job when they copied the 780 cooler over as it's to wide for the Hawaii chip. I don't recommend it as there are better cards w/o this cooler issue.
