Worth the upgrade from a 3600 to a 5800X3D?

Im thinking about upgrading my CPU from a 3600 to a 5800X3D and I am a little torn if I should do it😅 I have a RX6900XT and a 1440p 165hz monitor and mainly games and edits photos once in a while😅

Great to hear. Is there any point in running a 5900X og 5950X over the 5800X3D for gaming? And is worth getting the X3D over the 5800X for gaming with my GPU?😅

I've seen articles saying that above 1080p, there's far less difference between the 5800X3D and the 5900X, and now the 5900X is $50 cheaper than the X3D. If you ever plan to go up to 4K gaming, you won't see any difference between them before it's time for a new CPU/mobo.

Both 5900X and 5800X3D will be a nice upgrade, at 1080p they'll give like +25% (5900x) /+40% (5800X3D) more frames, but at 1440p it won't be that mindblowing, maybe +15 to 20% (depends on games tho)

At 1440p you are better off with the futureproofing that a 5900x gives since over 1080p is gpu limited, though if you just game then get a 5700x/5800x and youll be good

If you think you should just upgrade when next gen arrives then just run a 1.4-1.45v overclock on your 3600 for 4.5+ all core

Personally I'd get the 5800X3D over the 5900X.

In this case, future proofing more cores for gaming isn't IMO the smart way.

Future proofing with better gaming performance with more cache is, as your primary focus is gaming.

Right now the 5800X3D is the fastest gaming chip you'll ever be able to slot into your motherboard, so that is going to be the most future proof choice.

1080p benchmarks are important even if performance is the same at 1440p+....you're considering the prospects of "future proofing" in which case the 1080p data is going to be more relevant when you factor in future GPUs.

Personally, I would probably just wait for a new platform. 3600 isn't terrible. Although you could slot in the 5800X3D and get great performance, you might later feel regret for buying into an older platform instead of going up.

Do you have a 500 series motherboard or older?

If you're gonna be on AM4 for a while, grab that 5800X3D. Will be an amazing upgrade from the 3600. That's what I'll be doing. Gonna upgrade this 3700x for sure.

I am going to get a AM4 CPU since I recently bought a new MB, B550, and thinking of leaving the setup as is for a while😅

Ok, that should be good then. If it was a B450 o older, you'd be missing out on PCIE4 which might be important for storage and GPUs in the next couple of years.

I have a 3600 playing on 4K.

Safe to say the upgrade isn't worth it now...at the current price.

But, once AM5 comes out...I assume this will drop in price.  I looked at the 5800X history price chart and that dropped around $75-100 at BF time last year.  I'm maybe thinking this chip will do the same... but now my question is, is it even worth it then to upgrade with the benchmarks out?  I am kinda stuck here lol

Kitguru did a review of the 12600k with a 3080, in it, it did some tests at 1440p and against 10th gen Intel (which is about 15-20% faster at games than 3rd gen Ryzen), some games has as much as a 20% gain at that resolution.

The 6900xt is a fair bit faster at conventional rasterizarion, so it'd presume even at 1440p with the 6900xt an upgrade from the 3600 to 5800X3D would yield some noticable gains.

In that case it is a good upgrade. If you are doing anything else other than gaming it is probably worth going for the 5900X instead. If you are only gaming go for either whatever you think is worth your money. Keep in mind that you are essentially a 3D cache tester and it could be that there are some quirks you might not experience with a 5900X.

It is possible to undervolt the 5800X3D? Everyone is mentioning it's not possible to overclock it, but undervolting is also important. If you can't increase the voltage, it's reasonable to assume you cannot decrease it as well.

going from the fact that playing ROTTR at 4k maxes out the CPU *and* GPU 99% on my rig… this is nonsense.

Not to mention 8 CORES are recommended for emulation, which btw falls under "gaming"…

A 3600 is a nice little chip, but its objectively not strong enough for even current mid/high end GPUs.

PS: i would get a 5800X, everything higher seems like a waste for a few% more performance (depending on price of course)

I also would not pay to become  a  "3d" beta tester… but thats just me i guess.
