Is the adaptive refresh rate feature available on all Galaxy S21 devices?

Nathanpete

In the market for a new phone and the S21 FE looks good. I'm not entirely sure if the 6GB of RAM will be enough, but I still have many options.

Anyway, many articles claim the S21 Ultra has an adaptive refresh rate feature display, and that sounds enticing and I would definitely use it if it is anything like FreeSync on PC. But besides this one article from ZDNet, I don't see much evidence that this feature is found in the other devices in the S21 family.

Can anyone confirm or deny if the feature is present on the cheaper S21 phones?

Fuck you scalpers, fuck you scammers, fuck all of you jerks that charge way too much to tech-illiterate people.

Unless I say I am speaking from experience or can confirm my expertise, assume it is an educated guess.

Current setup: Ryzen 5 3600, MSI MPG B550, 2x8GB DDR4-3200, RX 5600 XT (+120 core, +320 Mem), 1TB WD SN550, 1TB Team MP33, 2TB Seagate Barracuda Compute, 500GB Samsung 860 Evo, Corsair 4000D Airflow, 650W 80+ Gold. Razer peripherals.

Also have a Alienware Alpha R1: i3-4170T, GTX 860M (≈ a 750 Ti). 2x4GB DDR3L-1600, Crucial MX500

mind if i ask where/how you will be using adaptive refresh rate on a cell phone? As in whats the compelling thing that would make this feature desirable on such a limited device?

Primarily watching 60FPS yt videos at a increased speed, so I can actually see it in 75 or 90 FPS, but I save battery compared to if the screen was running at 120 Hz.

I've seen claims of the range of the adaptive refresh rate being between 10 and 120 Hz, so even 24 FPS YT videos will work and I can save some battery using this feature.

It's not a super compelling feature, but it's a feature I would definitely be using.

ah ok. I suppose the battery savings would have to be considerable in order to justify the limited selection of devices that actually support it.

I sure hope the feature is smart enough to detect the actual baked in frames on a youtube video vs just looking at the codec. otherwise it will just play videos at the codec setting vs what the video is actually doing. tmk youtube doesn't support variable frame rate so IDK how the codec would even be able to tell the screen the framerate has changed vs just burning in the video to a single framerate

I can confirm the S21 FE only has 60 or 120Hz.

It does not have adaptive refresh.

Shoot. But it can dynamically switch between the two refresh rates at least?

Unfortunately it looks like I'm not in a position to purchase a new phone for at least another month.

Any clue if the normal S21, like the base model but not the FE, had the adaptive refresh rate feature? The OnePlus 9 seems enticing, but I can't buy it from Verizon yet.

I know its not the title question, but with one ui 4.1, the phone can use ssd space as ram, from 2 to 8 gb, customizable. It’s called ram plus

Not automatically, to my knowledge.
I only had the device for a week, but as far as I could tell, it was locked to whichever refresh rate you set it to.

This has been a feature of PCs for over a decade, and I'm certain even my own phone does that. It's called paging or swapping, and my phone manages the capacity and what's in it automatically. In One UI 4.1, you probably just now have the option to manage the capacity yourself.

It hasn’t been visible until one ui 4, but yes you couldn’t manage it until 4.1

not sure if it was there before one ui 4
