My IBM 300gl Sleeper PC Plan

It started when I found a guy selling old PCs on xianyu(the Chinese Ebay), I was facinated by the looking of one certain case, and that is a IBM 300gl.

572168535375581.jpg.141f56904556d55b5411a6c9badfee02.jpg

This piece of blue and the overall design hit my sweet spot immediately.

I googled more inf about this systerm, and I found an exactly sleeper build blog here .

(thanks for your inspiration)

So I bought a case for 300rmb (45US) at once.

but soon I found that every thing l knew about 300gl was wrong, because mine is a totally different model compare to the one I saw online. You can see that mine is about 2cm shorter and a little bit wider. It is labeled as a 300gl though, I guess this is like the NES and the FC when company saled two models in different places?  Beacuse every 300gl on xianyu is the same as mine, while most of the pics on google are like his.

For this build, I just grabbed my recently build ITX systerm for university.

(this is fully based on lego bricks so it is a little bit unstable and crappy)

I have a nice set for most of my usecase(gaming and light editting)

5600X + B550itx

16g RAM (I may upgrade later)

5-year-old 1060 6G (still good for most of the games even in 4k30hz)

SFX 650w power supply.

1t m.2 drive now, and maybe more in the future considerring my budget.

I would def take some accurate measurements of the box and the components, and before finalizing it all, run it through a CAD program like SketchUp to verify that you'll be able to get the sweet sleep aesthetic

hh I hope so, but I dont have one on hand and not familiar with CAD, I have to buy blindly. thankfully, I have many solutions on hand.

ok so imma nerd out here. if you can find a picture that has something that is a standard size, there is a free program called ImageJ that you can use to calculate dimensions.

OR

oogle the dimensions of the system, and then also the dimensions of your components, and sketchup has a pretty low learning curve (I was able to make a nuclear football PC model in an afternoon from no experience) and then I would just use plain boxes instead of trying to make it perfectly shaped.

the case, which had a history of roughly 20 years, was extremely rough and untight when I recived it.

so I have to use some elec tools for polishing, (it was too dirty with many hard scraches)

I used some medical alcohol and a drill with a soft polish head(sorry I dont know the proper translation for it), and it is significantly briliant and removed all the scraches easily.

(when pandemic was serious here, we stored bottles of medical alochol and never used one up, so it became a nice media for cleaning)

polishing head is a pretty accurate translation, my sleeper case needed a really good scrubbing with Lysol and rubbing alcohol to get the 1997-2019 grime out from being in a basement.

my dear father was trying to "help" and ruined part of the paint on the top😅, well, luckily it wasn't going worse before I kindly rejected his offer.

since I have a sfx power supply and an ITX board, I used the original power supply hole for my IO and it is nice that after 20 years, the graphic card still fits in nicely.

PXL_20220208_064746042.thumb.jpg.d12ef9e4458b9d1c55d6da67789cd81d.jpg

(I may fill the original IO hole with more PCIE cards)

this is the overall plan, I hope 3 90mm fans should be enough, since I dont overclock or running at full speed for long.

I can put 2SSDs and 2 hard drive now(I could put more in but the mother board only have 4 SATA connecters), and if I still got money left, I will consider a internet card

Oh, I forget to mention that I will use exdension cords for my weird layout. one for the 1060 and one for the power supply.

qq_pic_merged_1644305659888.jpg.529a9bfda385db5b764863f3a5da3296.jpg

(this one is 3-20$ depend on the lenth)

qq_pic_merged_1644305648828.jpg.9d172f52a482142ca5f9d0e01c95868d.jpg

(It is happy to build strange things in China beacuse all these weird techs stuffs are very cheap and convinient to buy online, and takes 1-4 days to get on hand)

now I have to wait for some accessories to arrive and prepare for the new semester.

I will have some progress a few days later when I settled at school. (😑probably)

I am settled in my dormitory now. my computer and monitor had just arrived this afternoon, so I can try to put everything together.

PXL_20220213_111110234.thumb.jpg.0bb5c5d696a52dcd8f581787f8eecb3e.jpg

I tried to build this PC and fixed several tiny issues.

PXL_20220213_131334341.thumb.jpg.43b3b3c579d44fcdb640ab623a02ad8e.jpg

But somehow when I turned it on, the monitor's backlight turned on currectly but no graphic was there. I was very nervers beacuse this means at least one part of my set was broken, I quickly figured out that it was the monitor. the specific evidence is probably cause by me using some wrong screws minutes before, which might have teared some cables inside.

I had to take this monitior apart, and thankfuly, it wasn't a big problem. Yes, I ACURRATELY broke the cable for signals. But I can again buy some for replacement online, which is way much cheaper than sending it to a store to be fixed.

Since my monitor is taking a break😅, and I can do nothing about it before the replacement arrived, I have to use my router and surface in remote desk mode to access my PC. I have a lot of work to do on my PC in the beginning of this semester. I can also run some benchmark and redesign the air flow inside, beacuse the original plan was really silly.

I bought some metal mesh original for real windows and cut a cover for this hole, I did a bad job because the mesh is so freaking hard. I also put the power extender here and grounded the case.

this bar was used to support the floppy disk driver, now it is used to prevent my graphic card from overbending.

I managed to do the cable management with a lot of zip ties.

PXL_20220216_140344444.thumb.jpg.938afe6263fdc18628546ea484ee904f.jpg

It is quite hard to drill holes in the dorm, so I used more zip ties for my power supply and a SSD. I will make them tougher later I got a chance.

As for the front, I will fill the floppy disk hole with a suitable USB expantion later.

As for the bigger hole, I am thinking about a panel form a disk driver along with some kind of a self-made curve thing to reach the original look.
