suggestions for a top of the line ssd?

so i've got the funds now to purchase an m.2 ssd, but i'm not really sure what to look for when it comes to top of the line specs. my board supports pcie 4.0 so maybe i should get a ssd that supports it aswell? i'm not sure but any help would be appreciated.

What types of things do you do? Even today, there's very few use cases that actually benefit from Gen4 drive speeds.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X · Cooler: Artic Liquid Freezer II 280 · Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Unify · RAM: G.skill Ripjaws V 2x16GB 3600MHz CL16 (2Rx8) · Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce RTX 3060 Ti TUF Gaming · Boot Drive: 500GB WD Black SN750 M.2 NVMe SSD · Game Drive: 2TB Crucial MX500 SATA SSD · PSU: Corsair White RM850x 850W 80+ Gold · Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow · Monitor: MSI Optix MAG342CQR 34” UWQHD 3440x1440 144Hz · Keyboard: Corsair K100 RGB Optical-Mechanical Gaming Keyboard (OPX Switch) · Mouse: Corsair Ironclaw RGB Wireless Gaming Mouse

It really comes down to what you want to use the drive for and what local retailers offer.

I personally have a 2TB Samsung PM9A1, which is very similar to a Samsung 980 Pro, but it comes in at a much cheaper price. The disadvantage with that drive is, that you don't get a manufacturer provided warranty as an end customer. In the EU that's less of a problem tho, as the retailer has to provide a functional product for 2 years. So I think it's a great option, as long as you live in a country where customer protection laws provide you with a warranty.

Other than that the SN850 is a great drive and one of the best out there at the moment.

No point in spending more than you need simply because your motherboard supports it. I'd get a more budget friendly drive. You won't notice the difference.

That's more or less as good as its going to get for a PCIe 4.0 consumer drive. However everyone is correct, you'd never notice a difference in real world usage between that and a few year old Samsung 970 Evo 3.0 drive, as an example.
