Cheap 11700K to replace 10900KF for platform feature access

Mister Woof

Budget (including currency): n/a

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly MMOs and games reliant on single-threaded IPC

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

10900KF 5.1 all-core max 5.3hz

Corsair Capellix iCUE H150i

Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite AX

Crucial Ballistix DDR4-4000 CL18 4x8GB

ASUS RTX 3080 TUF

Couple PCIE3 NVME SSDs

And a hard drive

Wondering if I should consider swapping out my 5.1 all-core 10900KF for a cheap 11700K. They are available semi-locally for $299.

I mostly play MMO-type games that are reliant on single-threaded IPC

Pros:

Better single-threaded IPC (gaming)

Allows access to my primary PCIE4 M.2 slot

Allows usage of PCIE4 spec-future graphics cards will benefit

Direct drop-in replacement without need to re-register Windows or reinstall

Can sell off the 10900KF while it still has value

Cons:

Not a large upgrade, possibly regression in some games/apps

Less L3 cache than the 10900KF

It's a circular logic upgrade; makes sense for the above reasons, but a platform upgrade probably makes more sense, but since a platform upgrade doesn't really make sense either, why would this?

Gear 1 DDR4-4000 might be hard to achieve with 4 DIMMS (currently at XMP works fine on the 10900KF)

Financially, it would be a slight wash. I paid $399 for the 10900KF last year, and I could probably get $300+ for it still.

Now, I know the gaming reviews show the 10900KF on top often and close to Zen3, but those are mostly GPU-bound titles and I'm not interested in that. I'm looking at FPS lows in MMOs and the like. Also access to PCIE4.

What say you, LTT?

I still feel how I did in that 12900k thread a while back. I don't think it makes a ton of sense, but I'm not one to judge on upgrades making sense. $50 for a little bit of performance isn't all that bad though. It's not like you'd really find a spot in your system to get that besides the CPU swap.

However, the 12700k is on sale right now...

$450 potentially from motherboard and cpu selling.

$120ish for this bump. Note Tom's hardware did these with 2x8 3200mhz (test set up is on page 2)

$120 for that bump to me, honestly, seems like it would make more sense than $50 for a smaller bump. B660 allows for XMP, but not CPU overclocking. The 12700f is $40 less than the K and $20 cheaper than the 11700k. The Aorus elite DDR4 board is stupid expensive. ($311). I've got the Aero G, which has gone up a little bit and is sitting at $290 if you'd want to OC.

That'd make it a $200 price tag on a swap to 12700k and now I'm seeing why you're thinking 11700k for simplicity. I guess the more I look at it, the more "in your shoes" I am and just as confused on which to go with.

I think if you didn't want to OC the 12700 it's a no brainer though.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't been really considering this too hard, but seeing the 11700k only $299 was somewhat appealing if I could get away with a 10-minute swap.

The thought of ripping everything out right now is not that appealing, especially for the price difference.

Hmmm

$299 for a 11700k sounds like you're near a Micro Center. If that's the case, they sell the 12700k for $50 more, and I've seen them open box for $240. It's really worth the extra $50 if you want to do the upgrade.

If you don't want to spend the extra on a 12700k, I wouldn't upgrade.

I'm not really, but I do have some buddies nearby.

Problem there is having to replace the motherboard too...which if I'm honest I just don't really wanna do.

It probably just makes more sense to wait for 13th generation later in the year. Or Zen4.
