Connected my new 1440p 144hz Monitor (LG gl850 b) to my laptop 1080p 60hz , 144hz capable monitor only maxing out at 60hz

Kushigro

Hi,

Previously i read that you can connect 144hz monitor to laptop and get 144hz refresh rate as both displays will act independant. was i under wrong assumption?
I have 7 days return period for this monitor and my new gaming pc will be build at end of the month so i need to test monitor with laptop to see if everything works. monitor is connected to laptop via hdmi cable

please check below screenshots..it is showing connected to intel graphics , is this because of that ? my laptop does contain Nvidia geforce 940mx graphics card

Does the cable you used to connect the monitor support that refresh rate?

Make sure either the cable you are using or the hdmi/DP port on your laptop supports HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2 or higher

I'm pretty sure that either the port isn't capable of 144 Hz at that resolution (i.e. it's HDMI 1.4)  or the iGPU isn't capable of it. Try setting the resolution in the Intel graphics driver settings instead of Windows settings. If it's not available there, it's not available at all.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Have you check the settings on the monitor? Out of the box the monitor wouldn't be set to 144Hz so I would have a dig around in the menus to start with.

Failing that it could be a HDMI cable issue i.e the cable can only handle 60Hz at 1440p. Anything less than HDMI 2.0 would (if I'm right in saying) would only be able to handle 60Hz.

so in  manual of my laptop they have only provided this much info of hdmi. no mention of hdmi. the hdmi cable im using is what came with monitor accessories so they wouldn't
send it if it wasnt supported144hz right? as per one person the port i have is 1.4 but i dont have way to confirm it

i could only found this much on hdmi version https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/522795/e5-575g-and-external-monitor-connecter-via-hdmi according to him its 1.4 but i dont have way to confirm it as manual doesnt share version no ( check screenshot in one of comments) . in intel graphics settings im able to get 120hz by using 1920 X1080 resolution image.png.e734aca7d9ff9957b1e2ff5e9072139c.png

That list only has HDMI 1.4 resolutions, so it's definitely an HDMI 1.4 port. You can try 2560x1440 100 Hz, but it's not possible to run the monitor at its full refresh rate from that port.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

so just to clarify there is nothing wrong with my monitor right? its just my laptop limit. once i connect this monitor to 3080ti in month it will give you me full resolution at 144hz?

Everything so far is normal. Obviously you won't know for certain that it's working until you can actually test it, but if something wasn't immediately wrong I doubt there will be any problems at a higher refresh rate.
