Where do I find some silicon wafers to hang up as art

Frugivore8894

I love lithography and I find the fabrication of silicon really cool so I was thinking about getting (if possible) a piece of discarded silicon or something similar. If I remember right then GN and MKBHD both have art like that. I don't want I print or poster I am talking about the real thing.

Sorry mods if this is more of an off topic thing 🙂

eBay would be a good place to start. Just type in silicon wafers and some will show up.

yeah ebay i guess. most lesser known dies like ethernet controllers would be pretty cheap, but if you want a wafer with pentiums on it or something expect to pay hundreds or thousands for it.

lol, CPU temp on my threadripper 2970WX shot up to the high 50's opening that file.

awesome photography though! Would definitely like some more of this if you ever get your hands on more dies.

Crazy to see all that detail in that picture. Zoom right in on all the traces and everything. Thanks for that!

Thanks, sure will... I've posted some as status updates lately, although smaller chips

The 386 was a challenge because of the area, used my CNC router to hold the chip and shift it around

Oh GOD you're showing off too much TECH PRON!!!!

I think I have a dead chip or two I could send you. Would you be interested in dissecting them? Or I could attempt it and send the core to you?

Eh why not, what do you have?

To see the details like that it has to be old processes up to about the early 90s, after that things become too fine and visible light can literally not get into things anymore.

This from 1985

becomes this, the array is just a uniform patch...

Can still make some cool looking stuff with the whole die view though, diffraction is nice...

I'd have to look. Probably a lot more modern. I think A series AMD, which is 65nm? Gotta look. Never know what's in the old magical boxes around here! lol.

@Kilrah I have an old Celeron if that's any use.

Edit: Its a Celeron 420 that released in June of 2007 its 65 nm.

Probably not, it'll be flip chip already.

Like on current parts all you see is actually the back of the die. If you were to manage to remove it from the substrate then all you'd see is a grid of contacts like on a BGA chip, all the circuitry is hidden behind those and it takes etching/sanding/I don't even know what's the right process to get to see anything... and it'll be way too fine.

The 386 is 1500nm 😄

AFAIK even the first Pentiums are already kinda too dense to see much.

I just found someone locally selling multiple 80C186s for $10 each. Might get a pair...

1.5 microns. Yes I know 🙂

But Never the less, I spent 10 minutes of time just for some extra on the side eye candies.

I present garage floor lapping. Or better know as concrete lapping. IDK, made that part up!!

Results thus far.
