[CNET] Update: Twitter being pursued for tax evasion in Turkey

ionbasa

Turkey's prime minister seems to still be looking for a way to silence Twitter in his country, saying in a televised speech Saturday that the microblogging service is a tax evader and that his government will pursue it.

"Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook are international companies established for profit and making money. Twitter is at the same time a tax evader. We will go after it," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, according to a report by news agency AFP. "These companies, like every international company, will abide by my country's constitution, laws, and tax rules."

his is unfortunate to say the least. Although I don't live in Turkey and shouldn't comment on such matters, it seems as if the Prime Minister at this point has officially gone crazy. It seems as if he is doing everything in his power to cover up whatever evidence has been stacked up against him. As always, if Twitter does get blocked again, I have no doubt that the people of Turkey will find a way around such Internet censorship and hopefully will be able to somehow oust the Prime Minister.

If it wasn't previous Turkey problems with twitter for another reasons i would say: "Of course, no government likes to see corporations "stealing money" if they don't share it with the government later".

Signatures are stupid.

Twitter actually does pay taxes through third party advertisement companies in Turkey. Not that it has to do even that. It's not like Turkish state does anything to help Twitter operate. This is just an excuse to justify unlawful actions of the government.
