New computer for a 12y old kid playing minecraft

leclod

Just a quick question for a friend who just discovered the screen isn't bundled with the pc,

Do you know what a 12y old kid playing minecraft would like for a computer ?

like which gpu power (I thought about a 3060Ti) does Minecraft benefit from a dedicated gpu ?

which cpu (usually a 3060Ti comes with a 11700)

and more importantly which screen ? which size, resolution, quality (I just checked the Acer Nitro KG272U 27" 1440 for 220usd)

Thanks,

I'm willing to swim against the current.

Anything would work, unless he wants RTX

You mean an igpu would be enough for a good Minecraft experience ?

Would he want RTX ? would an 3060Ti be enough in that case

3060Ti would of course do the job, but thats straight up overkill.. there are many people selling used, perfectly functional graphics cards that would be more than enough for minecraft.

the 11700 is alright, going for a 12th gen would be smarter though.

when it comes to the display, that honestly depends on personal preference and the budget you're willing to spend. any 1080p 23 inch IPS display panel would be good enough, especially for a 12 year old.

3060 and igpu are night and day difference. Something in between should give good enough results for Minecraft in fancy graphics mode. Kid of results that won't lag every time something more complex happens.

You can save by going with a lower end GPU. I've run Minecraft on a Core 2 Duo system with a 2GB GT 710, and it was perfectly fine at 1080p. I wasn't using any shaders or mods, but still.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

Polaris: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASRock X79 Extreme6, 12GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 1TB Crucial MX500, 750W Corsair RM750, Antec SX635, Windows 10 Pro

Pluto: Intel Core i7-2600, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASUS P8Z68-V, 4GB XFX AMD Radeon RX 570, 8GB ASUS AMD Radeon RX 570, 1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 3TB Seagate BarraCuda, 750W EVGA BQ, Fractal Design Focus G, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)

Thing is, the 3060Ti bundle seems a good value around here these days (from 1300 to 1400USD for a desktop pc)

For Minecraft, if you're comfortable building, you could easily get away with a 5600g. Play on that for a bit and decide if you want a GPU. You can always get a used GPU for a decent price or wait for prices to eventually come back down. Then you're not paying SI pricing on high price GPUs. If you're comfortable building, it's also might be a good introduction and learning experience for the kid too.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

it'd be better to have a budget and build around that

minecraft can be played on a potato to requiring a decent PC to run depending on setting and mods

from my personal experience with heavily modded MC, 32GB of RAM, and high IPC CPU is nice
GPU wise, if you want shaders then you'll want something strong, if not, then something cheap, or even iGPU, i was contempt playing MC on a gtx970, which is pretty low end in today's standard (equivalent to a GTX1650 or so)

but if you're building a gaming PC, might as well build a decent all-rounder so the kid can play other games as well if their interest changes

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

My 11 year old plays Roblox with my old amd fx 8350 and a rx 570. That build you listed will be more than enough

Thanks,

You can build a PC with a Ryzen 5 5600G and it'll run just fine.

I'm not sure what price of prebuilts you were looking at. 1tb is way more storage than they'd need for a while. The CPU cooler isn't necessary, the CPU comes with one, but it's a nice to have. That power supply is really good for the price. The fan on it is a bit loud, but if that's not a problem it's hard to beat for the cost. It would also leave room for a 6700xt or 3070 or lower later. In all honesty, I run a 5800x and a 6800xt on a 600W Corsair SF, so you might be able to get away with more gpu, but I doubt they'd need more. I didn't pick a case since that's a bit up to you and the kid. That motherboard might require a BIOS update, but it supports bios updates without a compatible CPU. Just need a USB drive. If you were to drop the CPU cooler and kick the storage down to a SN550 500gb, you could get the price down to $550 before a case.

I liked the smart 5600G road, but the kid liked the crazy 3600Ti road. Kid won
