Riser Cable

Hexxagone

Never used a riser cable before but want to for my new build, can anyone recommend a riser cable for a 3080ti?

Anything with decent shielding should be absolutely fine, something like this.

Do I need a PCIe 4.0 riser cable for a 3080ti?

You may need to set pcie to 3.0 in bios if using a 3.0 riser cable. 4.0 riser should work without config.  Performance difference between 3.0 and 4.0 is negligible.

So there will be a performance hit with setting a 3080ti to PCIe 3.0?

I was looking at this one at first but saw its PCIe 3.0

So why do people buy PCIe 4.0 risers if 3.0 works with no issues

There can be compatibility issues with Gen 3 risers and Gen 4 motherboards.

I have the new Asus Z690-E motherboard which I believe is PCIe 5.0 on the gpu slot, since CPIe 5.0 riser cables are not released yet, would I have to go into the bios and choose PCIe 4.0 since the 3080ti is 4.0 or would the motherboard automatically register that it is 4.0?

Based on how it went from Gen 3 to Gen 4, it may be hit or miss on if it will work correctly out of the box. Only way to know is to test.

I would set the PCIE speed to the cable speed so if its PCIE 3 manuallyt set it to that.

Motherboards on auto will try to run it at 4.0 due to the GPU and it can cause issues.

For me

Ryzen 5600x

gen 4.0

3070FE gen 4.0

NZXT h1 Riser gen 3.0

my PC would boot into windows and wokr OK, but as soon as I had any load on the GPU from games the games would crash.

some uses cant even get that far.
